Ok heres the deal I have a 79 bed with dual gas doors and the tool box on the pass. side. But the floor is rotten. The sides for the most part are good. I found a 73-79 bed with a good floor house and not so great sides for $350 delivered to my house. Plus the doner bed in a single gas door and no tool box. Hears my idea can I swap the inner and outer sides as one piece from my 79 bed to the doner bed? This way I can keep both gas doors and my tool box. I searched and found some threads about swapping just the outer fender, but my inner fenders are pretty good too so I thougt to swap them together. Also is there any differance between a 350 bed and a 250/150 bed. Thanks for any advice.
there are no differences in the beds from F100 to F350 except the older F250 highboys from 73 to 77.I would say you could separate the sides from the floor as long as you have lots of patience.they are spot welded to the floor section, the headboard and the rear part of the bed floor where the gate opens, unless you just want to take the outside skin of which is spot welded to the inner section of the bed.alot of work either way,but not impossible.
I usually just ground them off due to the fact the local parts store was never able to get the spot weld cutter I was looking for,its a drill bit more or less that cuts the center and the outside, the grinder is fine if your not trying to save the parts your taking off.even drill the spot welds with a 1/8 th drill bit in the center and then a 5/16 bit.here is a part number for the spot weld cutter.....K spot weld remover PN KT13517 and it is an 8.0mm and works very well and doesn't cause much damage when you are trying to save the parts you take off.
I am curious if you made this work and if so how?
I have basically the same problem. I have a pos bed on the truck but it has a good floor and I want the tool box. I bought a donor bed that is in very good condition except the floor is beat to hell and warped and starting to rot.
I also plan on swapping the gas tank filler holes to the square doors from the original bed.
Any help or tips would be helpful
how cool ,because I was going to do the same and i have both beds, but little time right now so take lots of pictures and i'll learn from your pain...I have got the spot weld drill bits and was going to use a thin chisel as i went to sepeate them ,good luck
