My overdrive light is depressed but the "off" light is flashing. Just
started doing this on the way to work this morning. Stopped to buy
diesel and when I restarted the light was off. After about two blocks,
it started flashing again.
Any ideas on what this could be? Is this the beginning of transmission troubles?
It means something is wrong with the transmission system. It could be a bad trans, a bad sensor, or a wiring problem. The only way to know what is wrong is to pay someone with the right tool to read the codes. The places that will read codes free don't have the tool that can read Ford transmission codes.
I was afraid it might be transmission trouble. I will take her in to Ford dealership today.
Thanks again for a quick reply!
Don't exactly remember what causes that problem but If I remember correctly it is external to the transmission. Switch? relay.? don't remember exactly what but not a difficult repair.
Short or open wiring, faulty solenoid, trans temp sender, torq converter clutch system electrical! Have your dealer give you a print out of all codes pulled!

It can be external or internal. It can be as simple as a damaged wire. It could be as complex as a failed transmission.
The flashing OD light doesn't point to one problem, it means SOMETHING is wrong with the transmission system. That could be an external sensor, or wiring, or an internal failure.
Not good........the torque converter is locking up and I will need a trans. rebuild.
They started yesterday and I pick her up today. Oh well, what do you do? It's just money......
First major problem with the truck but I still love her!

I would recommend you install an upgraded torque converter and makes sure the solenoid pack is replaced with current upgrades. I just had my tranny rebuilt and complete update 4000 miles ago. I also had all the driveshafts rebuilt/replaced to include the yokes. $4200.

So, the dealer is swapping trannies? Hopefully your reman is a good unit. I had issues with my reman Ford tranny in my old '99 PSD. I had them flash the PCM twice until the shifting flare went away.
They are rebuilding the tranny that is in there. I stopped in yesterday while I was renting a car after work. They had it torn completely down and were waiting for new parts.
I pick it up today at four. I will take it to the country this weekend and give her a good run. It has not been shifting good for a while, so I am anxious to feel the difference.

my truck was doing the same thing light was flashing off and on it was my speed sensor located on top of the rear axle 60$ part at the dealer
I was hoping for something like that also. However, it is shifting great now and I'm glad it's done.
If anyone in the Houston area is looking for a good dealer for service work, I can highly recommend the MacHaik Ford service department.
Thanks for all the replys.
