sending unit compatibility???

My swap is progressing. Now I need to figure out. Will the sending unit from a 1979 tank, work with my fuel gauge on my 1966 truck?

Thanks

are you using a 79 tank or ??? Without being an electrical guru, my gut instinct tells me there wouldnt be any difference so long as both sending units have one wire connections...

What tank are you using in this swap?

I used a tank from a 76 F-150 and installed it behind the rear axle and the guage works very well and is accurate. i put one from a bronko in my other 66 and it doesn't work at all but i am more suspect that the sender is shot as i did not do anything to it while it was out and easy to get at. now i'm to lazy to dismantle the whole thing again to fix it so i run that tank until its empty and switch to the other. PITA. but laziness is winning. Dutch

Did you shake the float before you installed the Bronco sending unit?

The floats are made from two pieces of copper soldered together.

Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles to the bottom of the tank.

It will be the stock tank from the 79, mounted behind the axel.

Smile checking the sender resistance

in general the sending units are resistors. checking with an Ohm's meter move the float through it's range and note the resistance at each end of the range. a bad unit will read either 0 or 1000's ohm's somewhere in the range. if the high and low resistance values of two good units are nearly the same then they are compatible.
