I had a similar problem on my 2003. Mine inexplicbly wnt into 4WD low and would not come out. I pulled the plug to the solenoid on the transfer case and jumped 12V from the battery to get it back into 2WD until I could run down the problem. This also let me know that the solenoid was good. I alos checked and found that I had 12V at the fuse panel and the relay was good.
Problem turned out to be the GEM module. After I replaced it, I disassembled to GEM module and there was some corrosion on the circuit board. Check my gallery for photos. Real easy to replace. Price quoted above sounds about right.
looks like my truck uses a jem which the dealer said was over 500 bucks!!! I need to be this is the problem before i replace it. is there any other ways to double check it?
Pull yours out, pop it open and see if the circuit board looks anything like this one. If so, that would be a tell tale sign that yours is toast.
No way I would pay $500.00 for one. I think mine cost something like $160.00 brand new. There are some supporting vendors on here that might be able to help you out on price, Another option is to get the part number and do a google search.

You won't see the circuit board if you go to look for it. It is in a black box located under the dash behind the glove box. The black box is abouyt the size of an envelope but thicker. It may be a little bit larger. I pulled the box apart to lok inside after I replaced the GEM because I wanted to see what went wrong (I couldn't help myself - I wanted to know why I had just laid out the moeny for a new one). If you can't find it, post back and I will try to get a picture of the exact location.

Good luck with it.
ha i looked today when the rain finally stopped and couldnt seem to find it. The only thing i thought could have possibly been it was pretty large and it had bolts holding it closed. I ran out of time so i wasnt able to pull it apart to figure it out. Is that it?
2 - Once the glove box is open, push in the sides of the glove box in to allow it fall forward (Towards you) and out of the hole in the dash for the glove box. Your glove box should now be hanging upside down between the seat and the dash by the hinges only.
3 - The GEM is located just above the upper right hand corner of the glove box opening behind the dash. More precisely, it is behind the dash directly beneath the far right air vent. You will have to contort yourself a bit to get at it. It is held in place by one bolt. There are three wiring plugs coming into the right side of the GEM , all right next to each other, that plug into the GEM. On my truck there was not a plug going into the middle female connector on the GEM. Yours could be different. There is also a plug going into the back of the GEM. Unplug the wire harnesses going into your GEM and it comes right out. I believe the bolt has a 7mm or 8mm head on it.
To further help identify it, there will be a white sticker on the black GEM. The sticker will have a bar code on it. The part number for mine is 3C3T-14B205-AB (yours may be slightly different. My GEM also has MAde in Mexico on the whote sticker and a build date of 12/2/2003. Below the bar code is written SPORT UTLITY 4X4. There are two large bold font letters on mine as well that read HA. You should be able to read all of this on yours with your head looking up behind the hole in the dash of the glove box.
Once you have the GEM out, it just un snap to the halves of the case being careful not to break it. At that point, the circuit board will fall right out. There are no screws holding the circuit board to either half of the case so be careful not to let it fall out when you open the GEM case. The circuit board is simply clamped between the two halves of the case.
so after what seemed like endless searching i do not beleive that my jem is located in the same place as yours and after doing alot of searching on here I came up with this
i know its been a long time but i have been busy with work and havnt got around to it but i checked the switch and there is no power going to it. does this mean that is definatly my jem? i also recheck relays and fuses.
