Hey guys, I need some help (again). I bought an '83 F-250 4x4 and I would like to change all of the fluids with the exception of the tranny and radiator, they're good to go.
1. Engine oil I can handle, although I'm not sure what type to use in a 351W. The engine has about 1800 miles on it since being rebuilt.
2. Front/Rear Diff. and Transfer Case. I have no idea what parts are needed to do this. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Unless it was rebuilt with a roller cam, there is an issue. Modern API SM 5W-30 does not have sufficient ZDDP for flat-tappet cam long life. If price is no object, 0W-30 German Castrol Syntec is a good choice. 5W-40 Shell Rotella T synthetic is more available and cheaper, would be my default choice. The other option is regular 5W-30 and a ZDDP additive. This usually ends up costing more.
If the T-case is the Borg-Warner unit, any ATF will work. Any 75W-90 gear oil will work in the axles, such as Castrol Hypoy. I would not use synthetic if the seals have not been replaced. 1983 is a long time ago.
Diff on the front is a pretty good pain...you have two options....either full dissasembly of the front end to get the diff out and drained....OR...a small vac pump to get the old diff oil out through the fill plug....that would be my choice on the front end if nothing is leaking and you don't need any new seals....
On the rear...you can just pull the diff cover off and drain it out....put it back on with either a new gasket or permatex and fill er back up....
