'04 6.0 Excursion?

I'm thinking of buying one of these however I don't know anything about the Ford 6.0's. I do have a Cummins so I'm not totally diesel illliterate. What are your likes and dislikes. Thanks guys.

First off.....WELCOME to FTE!

Generically speaking, try to get an '05 or newer. Getting a good deal on an '04 is possible, but you need to research it and inspect the engine carefully due to some problems with teh '03 and early '04 model years with the 6.0L engine.

I have the '03 Eddie Bauer with a V10 right now that I'm selling, and will ultimtaely replace it with either an '03 with a 7.3 or an '05/'06 with a 6.0. I absolutely LOVE the vehicle, but really want the diesel like what I have in my F-250... the 6.0 would probably suit my wife a little more since it is a tad bit quieter and gets a tad bit better mileage.

For sure, thoug, with the question you've asked, you'll get lots of input from lots of folks. You might also try the 2003-2007 6.0L forum in the Diesel section since it is really the engine that you'll need the most input for.

After head studs and an EGR delete...they're pretty reliable.

The head stud thing, though, can be a real budget buster if it hasn't already been taken care of before purchasing... unless it gets factored into the purchase price up front.

I have a 04 6.0 and yes I have bagged on it some here on this forum! But after finally getting an EGR valve and EBP sensor replaced It has been purring! I take very very good care of it, change the oil every 4k and fuel filters every 12k! All I do with my Excursion is tow, the rest of the time it's parked. I beat the living crap out of it while towing, pedal to the floor most of the time and it just keeps on running! When they are running the 6.0 motor is outstanding!!! I am planning on head studs at 100k and then an SCT tuner!! When this 6.0 takes a crap though, my Ex will have a common rail 5.9 Cummins! Looking forward to that!!

I have an 04 6.0 and I love it, and I'm sure you will too.

Maybe I'm missing something, but where is the origional post?

Post pictures! Rotella-T 5w-40 is great oil for it, 4 gallons. Replace your fuel filters if you dont' know when they were last done. Make sure that an aftermarket oil filter has not been installed. They were extremely popular, however have been causing problems with the 6.0. If you have a problem, and ford sees that filter, it will void any and all warranty's. I just replaced mine, the easy way to tell is if a normal motorcraft filter will not fit in hte cap. You will need a new filter and cap if you have an aftermarket filter on it. It will run you around $58 for both. You can tell the difference by looking at cap sizes, the aftermarket ones are about 1" longer than the stock.

Best of luck, and welcome to FTE!

Well I did it, I'm now a (gulp) Ford owner. 2000 Excursion with the 7.3 PSD. Seems like a good vehicle hopefully it's as good as my Cummins, I have heard a lot of good things about the 7.3's.

My wife really likes ours. I had to get a bigger vehicle because my wife is prego with #4, which just happens to be a boy! 3 girls 1 boy.

Congrads, 2000 is a great year for 7.3Xs. We got ours last year, coincidently when I learned my wife was prego with our 4th. Gotta keep her running for years cause the oldest is only 9 and they ain't making any more exxonvaldezs with this administration if power. Do yourself a favor and check the OASIS report. I'd suggest having the fuel line assembly replaced if she has 100K+ (I was told after the fact that it was a common problem). It could save allot of headaches.

Well, there are much more knowledgible people than I whom are more mechanically inclined. But, mine's got 134K now so they could be twins? That fuel line assembly failed will I was doing 80 on an interstate at night. People were honking at me, look in the rear view and there was a large vapor fog cloud coming form me... vaporized..misted diesel dripping down and under a hot motor. Stopped in the breakdown lane asap and instantly shut her off, due to diesel's good properties... only sizzled for a while while a steady stream of fuel puddled and dripped heavily onto the pavement..... just replace it. No other major things.... knock on wood :-)

For you guys that have done the EGR valve and EBP sensor what is this. I havent ever read anything on this and the issues the stock truck has against this. I had the studs done tho.
