92 f150 ext cab, 4x4, auto trans. 302-v8, 126K miles. Which header/cat back system will give extra power, but better millage? Is there one that is easier to install than the others? If you want to do it on a budget, but would like to get good stuff, any recomendations? I don't want to get abnoxious with the sound. I drive 50miles/day and would like to do something to improve millege. (I know, you don't buy a truck to save at the gas pump) I live in Wis. where salt is used all the time in winter. Thanks for input.

I have been looking for a simmilar combo for my '96 F-150 5.0L. I can't tell you from personal knowledge, but I have been in contact with North-American Motorsports about this issue. There is a parts tech there -- Jeff, who came straight from a Ford Dealer as a mech and he seems to be good-to-go.
You can reach him at 1-800-959-4550 or check out thier web site at http://www.namotorsports.com
N.A. Motorsports seems to have pretty good pricing--beat Jegs by 5%.

My favorite exhaust system is welded duals off the manifolds with glass packs. I run 18" glass packs, they give a rumble running easy but when you put your foot into it you can hear them. My exhaust exits out past the rear bumper so obviously that's where the noise exits. You could do the same with a Cat-Back.

NA Motorsports just told me that there will be a Bassani Stailess steel system available in the next few months for our application. Price is expected to be around a grand.

I have Summit headers, and cat-back 2.25" duals without mufflers, and echo tips. I know I gained at least 1-3 mpg's doing that.

I have a 96 F-150 4X4, 302/E40D auto. I put on a Gibson cat back system and JBA shorty headers. The Gibson is an aluminized system which is a lot lees expensive than a stainless system but it might not last quite as long. The pipe is large 3" diameter mandrel bent pipe and the kit comes with Gibsons hi flow muffler and a stainless steel tip. I chose the single side exhaust system because Gibson doesn't recommend dual tips straight out the back for towing applications (not sure why). I too was concerned about a loud obnoxious sound but the Gibson sounds real nice.

The JBA headers are a direct bolt on replacement for the factory exhaust manifolds and are supposed to bolt directly to the factory Y-pipe. They were easy to install and of good quality, but I did have a hard time aligning the header flanges to the Y-pipe flanges and had to have a muffler shop do the final connection. Both of these upgrades made the truck sound great and increased throttle response, but gas mileage improvements have been modest . . . maybe 1 to 3 mpg.
