is that cage all thats holding the spare? or is the factory cable still being used to hoist the tire up?
Yes the cable is still hooked up but it can be used without the cable. The rear legs of the carrier keep the tire from sliding forward while the hitch brackets keep it lined up from side to side. The rear of the tire is actually resting on the backside of the hitch. Its a pretty snug fit. But I feel better knowing it aint going anywhere if the cable breaks.
looks good. any problems with the tire touching the exhaust. i also run 35's and a full size spare (35")would be good.
No problem with exhaust. There is a factory bracket hanging down to prevent the tire from coming into contact with the exhaust pipe and I left if attached.
wish i had the materials to do something like that for that is nice!
Thanks. I have to admit, I am a scrap metal junky. I'll hoard any metal someone else throws away for something like this. Made the tire carrier out of someones old trampoline frame legs. It was the right size and just thick enough to be sturdy. Oh and the pieces of chain.....extra that I cut off of my beer lounging hammock.
When I got my 2006 SD my spare tire cable was broke look like the cable stretched or was cut not sure. I got another off ebay cheap and welded a nut where the key deal is as I do not have that and welded a 1/2" socket on the end of the winch handle. Now its nice and solid. Also if you look on the bracket that the winch assemble is bolted to there is small hole about 3/16". I drilled that out and dropped a bolt down through it and welded it so it doesnt turn and it lines up with lug hole and stuck a nut on it and drilled a small hole for a pin like used for hood pins just in case the nut came loose. Just some added comfort as I wondered if the cable would ever break.
Wish I would have thought of that when I had my last truck! I drove around most of the time without a spare. How hard is it to mount the tire with that system?
How about replacing the hex bolt head with a wing nut bolt or even make a key. Cut off the end of an old box end wrench and weld to a large wing nut head then you will have a specific key without having to pull out your ratchet.
