Hey everyone,,im looking into beefing up my truck,,its currentley got a 400m in it,,would i be better off upgrading it (which i hear can be difficult to do) or just swap out for a 460? Thanks
sounds good,,i hear all this talk about the smog controls in the heads,,if i wanted to put on some different heads they say i have to upgrade the pistons as well,,what aluminum heads could i use tht would increase compression with the stock pistons and not break the bank?
the D5(1975 model year) head castings have an added waterjacket that invades the exhaust port some. it can't be removed or you'll open up the waterjacket in the exhaust port.
"exhaust bumps" refer to small bumps on the roof of the port that can be removed, but they are there for a reason. not much is known or understood about the design and engineering of the 335 series intake and exhaust ports, they do not work the same as Windsor or any other ports for that matter. they don't respond well to ultra high-speed flow and extremely fast lift cams as some other ports do.
D5 heads work good enough for daily driver low end torque engines but obviously if the intent is to build more power, maybe a different head would suit the build better. pre-1975 400 or 351C 2V heads don't have the waterjacket exhaust port, aussie 302C heads, Edelrock, CHI and AFD are other option$ but may not be "bolt-on" due to compression concerns.
so Holiver31, what engine are you starting with and how much power are you looking to build?

im starting out with a bone stock 400 with the stock motorcraft 2bbl and im just lookin for about 300-350 hp. its goin to be a daily driver so id like gas to not be a huge issue but i want to have enough power so when i put my foot into it i know it will pull hard. im not lookin for a fast motor just one with some go low to mid range torque
you should go back in this section and do some reading on other builds and build options....this is probably one of the most common builds going for a 400 on this site and there's lots of reading to do.
