Testing sending unit

I was told in order to get the numbers I needed for a new fuel guage I have to short the connector to the sending unit witha paper clip turn the key to on and put a multimeter on the OHM's setting to the connector. Then the fuel guage I have currently would peg at full. Well I tried it and the guage still read empty. Did I do this right? Here are some pictures of what I did.

Sending unit?

Shorting out the connection?

That's the tank selector valve. Nothing to do with the sender. You need to drop the tank to get to the sender.

The wire for the sender is easily accessed, just jump that wire directly to the frame rail and see if it pegs the gauge with the key "on"

Bullitt390 is right, just pull the plug off of the sending unit on the fuel tank and ground to frame. Are both tanks not reading or just the one? I had an issue on mine where the main tank would read but not the aux. Turned out to be the selector switch at the dash needed cleaned.

Both tanks are reading on the current fuel gauge but I am trying to order a new style gauge. Was sportruk right about that not being the right wire?

You're picture shows the tank selector valve which has nothing to do with either the sending unit or the gauge.

You asked how to test the sending unit and now you state you want a new "style" gauge?

Conflicting questions.

Like everyone else says, that's a selector valve.

The sending unit is at the TOP of the tanks. Unplug these and short out. Then you should see the results on the fuel gage.
