EGR enabled and disabled comparison.

Thought you guys might be interested in this comparison.

About 5k miles ago the truck would stutter going up hills while towing until it downshifted...then it would run fine. I unplugged the EGR and problem went away so I left it unplugged. Milage went up slightly as well (at least it seemed to).

Today I had to take the truck in for a tranny flush so I plugged it back in. On the way home I was going up a long hill with the cruise set at 63 (about 1700rpm). The truck started stuttering alot until it downshifted then ran great.

Well, I had to see what would happen if I did that same hill with the EGR unplugged. Went home and unplugged it and headed back. Went up the hill under the exact same conditions and not a single stutter and it never downshifted. It was like a different truck.

Just thought you guy might be interested in how much of a difference it made. I know that my EGR is probably nasty as can be so I am cleaning it tomorrow. I am still going to leave it unplugged though.

I will post pics of the cleaning if anyone wants to see them. The truck is a 2005 F250 with 60k on it.

On edit: The reason I am not having the dealer do this under warranty is because I don't want to pay the $100 if I am just going to leave it unplugged anyway. I just want to see how nasty it is.

Is your engine an 04 or 05? Did unplugging cause a Check Engine Light?

EGR work should be with NO DEDUCTIBLE (part of the emissions warranty).

It's a 2005 engine. Yeah, the emissions light comes on (little engine outline). The check engine light (says "Check Engine") does not come on.

It throws two codes. I just ignore the light.

Really? The stupid dealer said that it is a $100 deductible. Hmmm. I will ask them. I still am going to pull it and clean it. Even if they fixed it I would still leave it unplugged.

Thanks for the heads up though. I might make them fix it if cleaning it doesn't work. I like to tinker with stuff when I can.

Mine never lit up the engine light when I unplugged my EGR valve.
I installed the new Turbo up-pipe with the EGR blocker plate, left the EGR plugged in.
I was reading about if the EGR is un-plugged the Truck can or may go into Safe mode.
Causing low Turbo boost and low performance.
This is where I purchased my EGR components:

No safe mode for me yet. Runs great. When it's plugged in the truck will downshift on certain hills. When it's unplugged those same hills won't cause a downshift. Screw the EGR!

When my warranty is up then I will be blocking that thing off too.

EGR delete/ block-off is in the future for me, as soon as the wifey finds another job! I had my EGR valve unplugged for @ 1 yr, didn't notice any performance difference, but with it unplugged I did lose about 2 lbs boost at WOT.

I installed the egr cooler bypass kit. I noticed signifigant turbo lag after the install from take off until 2000 rpms. After 2000 rpms it's like i hit a nitrous button. I think my next move will be the 5" magna flow exhaust with a programmer. I hope this helps with the lag. I may have to upgrade the intake as well. I currently have the stage 2 90 hp injectors with the upgraded fuel system. I also have the aftermarket head studs, 456 gears, yukon rear end, 12" of lift, & 20" rims on 41" iroks. Before the egr cooler bypass i had some, but very little turbo lag.

Just a question - i read a lot on here about EGR bypass and deletion - im wondering how much a disconected EGr affects emisions - in Canada i am subject to a test every 2 years. so if i remove the valve - will i fail a test? any thoughts?

Here in America there is a visual inspection and there is a sniffer in the tail pipe checking emissions. Leave your EGR intact, plugged in, replace your Turbo up-pipe with the blocker plate or remove the up-scoop in the original pipe and use the blocker plate.
When I had mine emission tested last time the emissions improved so much
the tech. made a comment to me that this truck is the cleanest emissions he has
seen for this year.

So i'm still learning all about PSD's. What is an EGR? I think its something that burns unburned fuel but not positive. How does it work? Do all the newer PSD's have an EGR?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). This is an emissions system incorporated into the Power Stroke family with the debut of the 6.0L in 2003. What it does is it takes exhaust emitted by the motor and runs it back through the motor one more time to clean it up. The exhaust is sent via a scoop in the up pipe to the egr cooler where coolant cools down the hot exhaust and is sent into the intake manifold via the EGR valve to get ran through the motor once more. All 6.0L's and 6.4L's have EGR systems. Save yourself some headache and try and delete the system if you can!

So your EGR is complete and you just blocked off the "feed" to it? do you still have the cat in place?
