How to change Glow Plugs

I have a question and hopefully someone can help? My engine service light came on and I took my 2006 Ford SD to AutoZone and had it checked with the old tester. I found out that my #5 Glow Plug is bad. I would like to attempt to change it myself and I have never done Glow Plus before. How hard is it and will I need anything else besides the new plug to replace the old one. Should I change all 8 of the plugs at the same time or will just changing the one be fine? I guess I am so use to Spark Plugs that I am a bit shy when it comes to the Glow Plugs. I looked for plugs but could not see them where exactly are they hidden? Thanks for the Help…

First, I have never changed a glow plug. It is raining in GA. I had some time to dog out a little info for you. Great Site we have here. Go to this link on this site:
Powerstroke 6.0 L Technical Intro Manual
Powerstroke 6.0L Technical Intro Manual
located here:
Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums > Diesel > 2003 - 2007 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel
6.0L Diesel: ..................Tech Folder..............

Try pages 66, 67 & 68. If you like what you see there, best you buy the book. For me, I would not attempt the project. Good luck, and hope this helps. It might even be as simple as changing to a new GPCM, but above my knowledge and ability.

Truthfully, I learned a lot, getting you the above info.

And thanks for protecting us in Germany...

I have no idea how different the 6.0 heads are than a 7.3, but on the 7.3 the hard part is getting the stupid valve covers off. Once that is one, the glow plugs are a cinch.

Unless I am mistaken, they should be covered under the 5/100k warranty.

I see your location says you are in Germany (there are Auto Zones in Germany?) but if it's at all possible I would let a dealer handle it.

Thanks

I found out that it is covered under the warranty. The Ford Dealer said I had to pay a $125.00 deductable which covered the diagnostic check to find out what the exact problem would be. Once the problem was found and proven to be engine related then they would use that towards the repair. However that works I just wonder how much more it will cost me on top of that with labor or do you think it covers it? I also fixed my location I am now in Texas sorry about the confusion and thanks for the advice.

If they determine it's engine related the only thing you should pay is the deductible which should be $100 - don't know where that extra 25 bucks is coming from.

Thanks

I think the 25 covers the actual test they need to do to find the problem. Thanks for the help...

Where abouts in Texas? You can buy a glow plug for less than $125, but depending on how handy you are with a wrench, and if you've ever worked on a 6.0 before, there's a good chance it will take you 4 hours or more to change the glow plug by yourself.

Unless something has changed, I agree it should be a $100 deductible. You might call a different dealer and ask what the deductible is for warranty work. Explain the code to them and see if you can save $25. Just be sure to ask how long the repair will take. Some shops can be backed up for a week or longer.

I finally took my truck in on the 4th. They finally tested it today so I have been without it for three days now. They called me and said there is a circuit problem with the #5 Glow Plug and could not tell me exactly what the issue was. Is it actually a circuit issue or does that mean the glow plug is bad? Sounds like they are fishing for more ways to hit my wallet harder. LOL They also said they would know more hopefully by tomorrow and if I wanted to get a loaner car from them it would be free except the insurance is all I pay. They are telling me this now they could have offered it to me they day I dropped my truck off to them. Luckily I have my Harley to get back and forth to work. Sounds like I will get my truck later next week sometime at the rate they are moving to find the problem and fix it. What do you think it’s in the wiring somewhere or just a bad Glow plug?
