Question F350 XLT hard to start

Hey Buddies,

i`m from Germany and have a problem with my Truck 1996 F350 XLT 7,3L Turbo Ex US Air Force.

I come home one day and will start in the next morning but nothing only white smoke.

fuel system for me ok. glow plug relai is new (March last year)

After work i start it again...nothing only white smoke.

glow...glow...glow...glow...glow...glow...start, nothing.

god damn...looking for the fuel filter...not the best but ok...(reamplacment next week)

glow...glow...glow...glow...nothing...pull out the air filter...glow...enging crank but will start.

Next Day: glow...glow...glow....hard to start but run.

What next week comes new: Air Filter, Fuel filter, Glow Plugs.

Plugs because i don`t know how old they.

Weather: 0 c° or -1c°

Is it a glow plug problem or is it more?

But how is it with the oil preassure?Must they start and the pressure comes or must the start and the preassure comes at the same time or must come the preassure first and than start?

The next problem is: I have reamplace my clutch last year because i have rattling noise i push the clutch the rattling noise is gone after the clutch reamplace i have the same problem...but now when the Truck is running without air filter no rattling noise...

Thanks for your help!

Grettings from Germany!

Sounds like you are having a problem with the glow plugs or the glow plug relay, even you replaced it last year. You can "jump" the 2 large terminals on the top of the relay with a screw driver for about 30 seconds then try starting the truck. If it fires right up the relay is bad. Be careful not to touch any thing metal with the screw driver other than the 2 large terminals. Also if you watch the volt gauge when you first turn the key to get the wait to start light, it should pull way down towards the left of the gauge. If it doesn't, this can indicate a relay or glow plug problem.

Have you had the engine olugged in to warm up? Same issue? If so it may be the GPR. They seem to go out whenever they want.

Are you guys on 240V for household AC? The block heater expects 120V AC, so you'll need some kind of voltage step-down.

You need to TEST the GP relay, glow plugs and associated wiring. There are a LOT of threads on the topic, many of which include testing information. You'll need a multi-meter for this.

I think the problem are the plugs because the truck is running 10 or more minutes and i restart the truck no problem.

But what is with the oil preassure and the rattling noise

How i say...the rattling noise is gone after run my truck on idle without the air filter.

The problem with the autolites is not only that they fail, but when they do, the tips will SWELL and you can not get them out without removing the head
