My Temperature on my gauge as I am driving it, goes up to the "M" on normal, however if I shut the truck off and just for a minute and restart it, its way down to the "o" then as I drive, it goes back up to the "M" again. I know its not running hot, does this sound like a TEMP SENDING UNIT problem or is this about normal.
That sounds normal for your '97. If you keep driving, it should drop down to the "o" when the thermostat opens and sends in the cooler water into the system.
Mine does this also, but I just noticed it last week. Only had the truck about 3 months though.
Weird thing, it doesn't seem to do it while I'm sitting at a redlight or in any traffic, only so far while I'm driving on the highway. It will stay around the M or so, drop down some and climb back. But as soon as I get off the highway, it drops straight down to the N.
Kinda worried me the other day when I first noticed it, but gonna keep an eye on it and look around some more.
On the highway the air is flowing faster to cool the water in the radiator as it passes through the system......When you're in stop and go traffic there's no airflow to go over the fins in the radiator, so the water doesn't get as cooled.....Again, perfectly normal
Before I got my aftermarket temp gauge, it would go slightly higher right before the thermostat opened, but after that initial surge, it stayed rock steady near abouts the "O".

This would be good if it matched the description of the symptoms, the gauge goes up on the freeway and down when I slow down. Sounds like the same as SERATT's description as mine
The only time my truck temperature creeps up is when I was pulling a 4000 lb trailer on the highway with the stock 1-row radiator. Empty, it runs right at the thermostat's rated temperature, idling or cruising the highway.
