New member to site> what I have seen so far is awesome. I have an 1989 F150 that the fuel guage wont read on either tank. The fuel pumps are functioning and the tanks switch just fine. Any suggestions??
The brass float in tank is bad about leaking. This will make your gauge read empty all the time. The dealership where I got mine had a box of them under the counter they sell so many.
pegged to the right (FULL) could be caused by a open in the wiring or a high resistance and all the way to the left (Empty) is a a short in the wire or low resistance.

wow brass float ? my 88 had a composite float guess I'll have to check the other trucks around here and see if they changed em after 88?
sounds like the gauge or a wiring problem to me guy!would lean more towards wiring since ya get different readings from both tanks!do a search under wiring and maybe a schematic will turn up-then ya know what your looking at-wiring can give ya the blues on these trucks-could be as simple as a bad ground! good luck-stop in and let all of us know what ya find out
yea the beast burned 70 gallons of fuel that weekend to get there, around and back. but ive heard theres also a ground problem on them 2
well on these trucks -it's a moisture/rust thing? and not only on the grounds-these old girls don't like water or moisture-not one bit! why ya see so many of them being hauled out of mud bogs by chebbies-it ain't cause the can't make it through the mud they just hate water!-kinda like cats!
lmao around here (las vegas) u dont see that many old chebby just fords same thing out in the desert just fords not to many chebs and the ones that are out there got some deep dollars put inem to take the abuse i love fords just not the new f150 i beatem all the time
If it's not the float, it's usually the contacts on the fuel gage sender get gummed/worn out.
Time for a new sender.
yup you right most I have seen is a composite float! don't sink! with the gauge being different on both tanks it may be! one empty one full-still would check the wires though-easier than pulling tanks! unless ya pull the bed off-and then ya got other issues! fill tubes -wires bolts E.T.C ! good call though guy! worth a shot!
