running board adjustment/alignment 55 help

So, its time to mount my running boards for the (near) final time..

on the passenger side the rear arm is down too far. Anyone have the adjustment/fitment instructions? am I supposed to bend it? like with a jack?

the rear edge of the board is below the fender edge. the front hole lines up on the front fender..

what is the spacing on the seam between the board and the bed? I had mine closed/flush (with a screw during testing)..

thanks

Sam

I used a piece of rubber fender welt that was left over from the rear fenders and put between the rear edge of the running board & the fender. You may have to bend the brackets, My rear fenders the running boards are bout even.

I thought I had a better picture

If it is close you can use body shims to fine tune it. As far as the seam between the board and bed goes, I have seen it all over the place on other trucks. I have got mine with nearly no gap at all.

thanks..

I am using the wider fiberglass fenders which have an indent where the board fits. seemingly ok on the drivers side, but way off on the passenger side.. rear only..

bend the bracket was what I was thinking..

Did you have the fender off since you tried it last?? If so you may have the fender to high on that side. I put mine on with the fender install and had no problems. I left the fender loose till I bolted down the boards and that lined up everything

I used fender washers(and beer) to space up my boards to fit the fenders. I have no gap between the boards and fenders.

the fenders were off to paint, and I didn't spend much time before trying for a perfect match.. there is no play in where the fenders mount, as I drilled the holes to match the pre-drilled bedside holes.

the issue is that on the passenger side, there is about 3/4 in between the bottom of the board and the rear board bracket.. longer than the bolt to hold them together..

Did you replace your bedsides? I had a similar problem to you when I redid my 53 F100 years ago. I put Ford replacement bedsides, original fenders and Ford replacement running boards on. I had a similar gap between the bottom of the running boards and the running board bracket too when it was all bolted up. Could not figure it out so I added a 3/4" shim for the gap and went on. Years later I found out the replacement bedsides, even though they were Ford brand, were meant for 57-72 stepsides. The difference as I recall, was the fender mounting holes/bolts were about 1" difference in height from my original bedsides to the replacements. The fenders mounted higher causing the running boards to run uphill at an angle, hence the gap between the boards and the bracket. You may be able to check some measurements from you truck against one you know to be original or stock.

Yes, did a complete bed replacement, aftermarket.

I did have to put a jack under my running board brackets to give her a little nudge, but I understand the please don't touch the freshly painted board feeling. Be Careful and don't put tools inside the cab without something on the boards, I have the chips to prove it. Thank the lord for a sharpie.

Sam,
If your brackets aren't bent it may be better to elongate the holes in the running board bracket so it adjusts up/down then grind off the end if it extends too much past the top of the frame.

my brackets have nuts welded on to place them (stock).
I don't know if they are bent..

so I was looking for the ford procedure to do this adjustment, just to see what they suggested..

I am assuming that all 4 brackets are identical (mine are on my '54). Stack them on top of each other to see if the one bracket is out of shape. I moved front bracket to rear and rear bracket to front and my fitment problem went away. Made no sense, but it worked! Just a thought. Have fun, Steve
