k i got a good grasp now so also is there a valve cover gasket i should be buying with my glow plugs?
No, it's a rubber type gasket. Very rare for those to go bad. You can ohm the pins in the pass thru connector, and a visual inspection of the gasket will tell you if there are any issues, but I've pulled the valve cover on probably a dozen trucks and never had to replace a gasket yet.
k i did the ohm test at 20k on the passenger side firewall to front end i got .05, .37, 2.55 and a no read nothing showed up on the tester. and on the driver side firewall to front end i got no read all three of them and -0.00 on second one from the front. i changed the 20k to 200k and 2m to see if anything was going on got nothing so please guys help me out tell me what this stuff means if you can i did the test at about 1:45 pm at probably 42 to 48 degrees a little windy but had good connections. thanks all
I buy everything like that from powerstrokeshop.com. Best prices and fast shipping.
I 2nd there's usually no need to change VC gaskets. I did changed the under valve cover harnesses 'while I was in there' since they were only about $26 each (powerstrokeshop). I had the problem with connector coming loose (fixed it the way Chris described earlier) and figured it was good preventative maintenance since my rig had 240k at the time. The 'new' harnesses come with a much better clip design, so no 'rigging' was necessary.
Sounds like you have only 1 good glow plug. I'd suggest going ahead and change all 8. You've just performed the same test the mechanic did to determine you had faulty glow plugs. It wasn't really that hard to do was it?
Changing glow plugs is the same way. Intimidating at first, but after you've done it, you realize it wasn't really that bad.
what does it mean in the ohm scale when it doesn't read or is under the .6 guide line you guys tell me for min. resistance i obviously see one of the plugs was bad by the 2.55 reading but i had a hole side have almost no read and th eone that did read gave -0.00 any clarification would be helpful thank you
k so shorted out means the plug is bad is there more than can be wrong with a .000 reading or changing glow plugs is the answer... i guess i am asking is there a possibility of an electrical problem?.. cause on the ones i say i got no reading i mean no numbers came up lol i had only one plug which came up -0.00

Your truck is a 99, right? Some of the 99's did have a problem with the wiring for some of the glow plugs rubbing against a push rod and shorting out the wire. This would mean you MIGHT need a new harness under the valve cover in addition to the new glow plugs. International sells the updated harness (so this doesn't happen again) for less $$$ than Ford sells it.
I borrowed these pictures from Dan from his 99.
See the white wire touching the rod? If you move the wire, or remove the harness to inspect, the wire actually looks like this
yup. they are crap. if you are going to put them in, put $1500 on the side so you can have the heads pulled in 2 months time when the burn out and swell the tips, forcing you to pull the heads to get them out.
Anyone else have any experiences with Delphi glow plugs?
How much are you saving? The ZD11's retail for like $11 and Autozone sold 1000's for $0.01 year before last. Forever there were folks reselling them on flebay, etc for $5-6 each.
For me, if ONE person had to remove the heads from the 'inferior' brands - I wouldn't risk it. JMHO!
