As most of you know, my AOD dropped dead on me. I have been planning on a rebuild/upgrade to mine, that someone is willing to rebuild and add all the AODE upgrades to including a shift-kit for a grand.
I would like opinions on whether this is easy enough to swap in to my truck and get the transfer case connected to it without much trouble... Or should I spend the grand and get mine rebuilt knowing it's getting the upgraded parts?
I know there are alot of experienced minds here that could tell me pros and cons, which is what I'm looking for. If this was your truck, with a blown tranny what would you do?
the lincoln tranny will bolt to your motor but it has the wrong output shaft to attach your transfer case to,the tranny will have to be completely disassembled to switch the output shafts, so in my book you should just spend the grand and have yours rebuilt,or swap it to a manual trans.
Yup^^^^. You will have to completely disassemble the trans to swap output shafts. NOT EASY. And it has been my experience that a stock AOD is crap in these trucks. I had to have mine rebuilt 4 separate times in high school, and i was only driving for 2 years. (Before you say i beat on it, this trans was behind a TIRED 302, didnt hardly have the power to do much damage)
83stepside - That's kinda what I was afraid of, having to tear it down anyway. I wish I could find a 5spd to swap in, but they seem rare here in FL. I'm keeping my eye out though and fingers crossed. I'd prefer the manual.
Blue Rebel - I know the AOD's are crap. That's why mine is dead in the yard. Mine was originally behind a tired 302 as well, then I put in the built 351W, guess that was the final nail in the coffin.
If anyone knows of a heavy duty 5spd with linkage I could swap in reasonably, please let me know.
