97 Explorer 5r55e question
I have a 1997 Explorer 4.0 SOHC with a 5r55e transmission with 135000 miles. The OD light started blinking intermitantly. While the OD light is blinking the transmission still shifts what I call normally and I can even turn the overdrive off and back on using the OD button and feel the transmision change gears and see this on the tachometer.
Went to a transmission shop today and had the codes retreived, P0741. The shop owner said this code was the TC was stuck or not locking up properly. Research on this site I found where the code means TC clutch system improper mechanical performance. Both sound close enough to me.
The shop wants to replace the electronics and soleonoids, update the valve body, replace TC and clutches, and whatever else that needs replacing, or basically rebuild the whole transmission. Cost $1500 - $1800 minimum up to $2500 to $2700 maximum.
Is this reasonable to replace all of these items for this problem? Any other advise is welcome. I will be getting a second opinion tomorrow.
