Emissions question?

I have a 00 explorer sport and have been looking around for things to do. I have plenty of ideas and just wanted to know if anyone could tell me what sort of mods are not street legal or against emissions in most states.

Examples:
KN filter (OK)
KKM filter (on webpage they say maybe)
Exhaust (what sort of systems are OK)
Chips (Superchip, etc..?)

These things for example. Thanks in advance

Emissions question?

For the exhaust, in PA it has to have a catylitic converter, a muffler, exits out past the body, and no leaks. The rest is up to you. Noise is not a part of state inspection, but it is part of the vehicle code. The vehicle code is all the stuff the cops can pull you over for

Emissions question?

LAST EDITED ON 19-Jun-01 AT 06:04 PM (EST)[p]I love Illinois. We don't have inspections for pickups or cars. No cat? As long as it isn't EXTREMELY obvious (i.e. major rumble and constant black smoke rolling out) then you haven't got a problem. Exhaust lets out underneath the truck? Nobody cares! Leaks? Holes in the pipe coming off the manifold give it character (and a nice Tin Lizzie sound.) If they ever do start inspecting this stuff......(please lord god no!)....uh..... then I'll be walking or riding the Ranch King because NOTHING I have will live up to their rules.

'88 C-1500 Cheyenne Regular Cab Longbed, 262 TBI, THM 400, GM 10 bolt 2.73:1. Single exhaust, cat in place and mostly functional, no muffler, lets out a foot in front of rear axle at 5" oil reducer fitting. Moderate noise expressed as deep rumble.

'82 F-150 XLT Lariat Supercab LWB, Jasper Rebuilt 302 2bbl Motorcraft, AOD, Ford 9" 3.25:1. Dual exhaust, leak near front on drivers side, one cat (passenger side) and it's barely functional. Dual Allis Chalmers mufflers, full exhaust is 2" turkey feeder pipe until 6" tips at back. LOUD crackling exhaust from left pipe, low rumble from right.

Emissions question?

I think that's a local thing for y'all. Are you up north in a metropolitan area? If so, that's why. It's not a state law. I live in the southeast corner of the state (which is more or less all rural) and we have no emissions testing and they best keep it that way. I think it has something to do with mass traffic. For example, my county has around 13000 population while in the north end of the state, they have that on some blocks.

Emissions question?

yeah you've got a good point.

Thanks to the replies, I checked on it myself in the state law here in NH and its pretty much like elsewhere-you need a muffler, blah blah blah
