I got some loud pipes. Pipes all depend on how yo want it to sound and what size of engine you have. My mom's got 18 inch cherry bombs and no converter running off of a 302 and that truck is a whole lot louder than I thought it was gonna be when I put them on there.
I've got a hollowed out converter, then 2 1/2in pipe back to the axle where it turns to 3 in and then a 3 1/2 in chrome tip out the side. Not bad for only costing me $10. I got part of it free.
Muffler?!?!? Why would you want a muffler?!?! If you've got a cat, you don't NEED a muffler! Hell, even if you don't have a cat, you don't NEED a muffler! I hate mufflers! Mufflers muffle! Why PAY to ruin your exhaust system?!? Why PAY to rob your horsepower?!? It's a conspiracy!
Anyway, I've got two trucks and thus, two systems.
One of em is my creation. The cat is still in place and mostly functional. Behind the cat I have about 2 foot of 2 1/2 inch pipe. On the end of that, I have a 5" oil reducer fitting. Before I had that, I experimented with MANY tips, all of them free and made from stuff that was laying around. A 3" normal exhaust tip didn't fit my liking. I cut the end off an old glass pack, cleaned it out and made a nice tip, but it just wasn't what I wanted. I cut open a muffler I found along the side of the road one day and cleaned it out and left it on there for about 6 months. I got tired of that echoey holler, so then I just stuck the reducer on there. Total cost: $1.49 for adapter to make the reducer fit. Sound: nice low tone rumble. Sounds mean at low rpm under load.
Other one was installed by previous owner of my other truck. It has homemade dual exhaust, which means that the right side still has the cat and the left side never did. The cat is partially functional. All pipe behind the cat and all pipe on left side is 2" turkey feeder pipe. On the left side, near the front, there is an exhaust leak and it crackles real beautifully out of the hole. The one thing he did that I wouldn't have done is install mufflers. However, these mufflers are allright: Allis Chalmers tractor mufflers. The pipes come out the back under the bumper. Cost: unknown, but estimated, $30 for mufflers, rest he probably got free. Sound: Excellent! Left side has loud crackling roar, right side has steady low tone rumble.
On a side note, I wanna know when deere is gonna put some pipes on his Stang. That thing sounds ok stock, but it needs to be louder!
Sounds like your pipes suck. I have Flowmasters and they rule!

Flowmasters are ok if you want to waste a few hundred bucks, but, ya see, some of us ain't rich. Can you explain to me why I would put a $200 exhaust on a truck I paid $325 for? I'd rather have a near FREE exhaust that still sounds pretty cool. My pipes don't automatically suck because you blew a lot of money on yours.

Why don't you post a sound bite of your expensive exhaust? I'd like to hear it. I've heard some Flowmasters and they are ok, but I still couldn't see myself payin out as much as they want for em.
Anyway, y'all can have a listen to my trucks. Note: The Ford runs a lot smoother now. That sound bite was taken soon after I got it and it ran REAL rough back then. The only part of the exhaust on that truck that people usually say sucks is the popping exhaust leak near the front. I'm thinkin about patchin that up soon. Unfortunately, I think the sound bite was taken a little too close to that, so you hear it predominantly over the pipes at the back. Still, you get a basic idea. Also note the quick cold start of the carbed '82 Ford vs the crankmania on the TBI '88 Chevy.

If you can spend $320 on an exhaust, you can surely buy a cheap little tape recorder, record your exhaust, put the tape in a walkman with the line in on your pc hooked up to the headphone jack and record with windat or sound recorder. Then get a free website at some free server and put it up on there.
Personally, I used a security camera with audio (because it had a loooooongg cord) and plugged it directly into the computer line in.
I meant $310 and you are going to ruin your 302 with a cat on one side and no cat on the other!!! Why the crap did you put diesel mufflers on it? I think the 4.3L sounds better. Your motor is going to be ruined. Do you have any kind of messenger so we can talk? If not go to http://communities.msn.com/LittleSaharaDunes and go to the chatroom.

Well, the point is, I DIDN'T do the exhaust on the Ford. Previous owner rigged up that little gem. I built the exhaust on the Chevy. Anyway, I've been planning to get rid of the Ford's cat anyway so that it'd sound better. Also, I'm not talking about a fully functional cat here. It doesn't do much but sit there on the pipe. I never even really thought about the uneven backpressure, but you do make a good point. Then again, that exhaust leak on the drivers side would put a little back pressure on that side to equal it out a bit with the other. You know, if we kept posting back and forth like this on here, our membership status would skyrocket.
