they are heavy, the one i towed was custom made by my neighbor.
Do i dare say what i towed it with?
chevy 2500 with a 350 (wasnt my truck). I didnt have to make any quick stops though.
heaviest thing i pulled with the 300 six was our 25 ft camper, which im guessing weighs somewhere around 5000-6000 pounds loaded up. Had to keep the pedal to the floor to maintain 60 mph.
it had decent power, i dunno anything about the gear setup in that truck though, i helped him swap in the 350 (used to have a 305). He had a decent setup in the truck though, it seemed to be a well matched combo, the owner of it beats the living crap out of it though.
Taking off with the 300 however, was actually pretty good. (im sure the old clutch hated it), but it got off the line great, it was at the point of about 3rd gear, or around 40-50mph, you could kiss the acceleration bye bye, which makes sense with the 300's power range.
i dunno if comparing a 1/2 ton truck with a 150k mile 4.9l motor to a 3/4 ton truck with a fresh 350 is fair, but i wouldnt be afraid to tow with the 300 anyday.
And the F-150 300-6 probably had 3.08's while the Chevy 2500 probably had 4.10's.
I doubt it was 3.08!
Gearing makes such a huge different. My dad pulled a heavy trailer one time with his Elky some years back. I want to say it was a 20 footer but I can't remember. It was big though. Regaurdless it should have been nothing for the Elky to pull it with the 350 horse V8, but because the elky had 2.73 gear ratio at the time it struggled with it. I rememeber my dad complaining about it.
My truck can idle like "normal" almost with 6K behind it, but that's all in the gears.
People who aren't gearheadz like us praise and curse motors unfairly all the time. Like when Joe Blow gets all ticked off at his truck because it won't pull for crap. "It's a peice of crap Ford, that's why." Really? Peice of crap Ford? You idiot, have you ever even looking at your gear ratio? I bet you don't even know how your transmission is geared.
A lot of trucks, like mine, came from the factory with highway gears and an automatic. Not the best for towing, but people still tow with trucks like these, and then call them gutless.
im willing to bet money my f150 had 3.08s, but it was a standard. Was great for running on the highway empty, the engine would electronically shut off at 104mph tho...
It's not the pulling, It's the stopping!!!!!
It takes big brakes and truck weight to stop a heavy loaded trailer and not be pushed by the load in a panic stop, especially in the rain.
4x4 Bart is pretty much right. But last year I pulled a 4500-lb Ford tractor on a 2000-lb trailer with my '89 half-ton with ¾-ton springs...my truck has an M5OD and 3.08s. It was a slow haul up some of the hills we have around here! But I never went below 50 in 3rd gear...sure, the ol' 300 was screamin', but I still managed to pass big trucks! Gotta admit, though...like 70torino429 said, I did have to do a little more clutch slipping to get everything moving.
I've pulled the same trailer and tractor with my dad's Excursion, and compared to the X, steering my truck was a breeze...no wander at all, compared to the X with its soccer-mom springs. And with the factory brakes on my truck, it stopped remarkably well (but yes, someday soon I'm gonna get the trailer brakes working). But if I ever come across a wrecked SD with a V-10 and 4.30 axles, I'm probably gonna try to buy the drivetrain!

Morons.
End of rant
Pulling a 6,000lb trailer around your neighborhood is nothing like actually being out in traffic and on the highway with that kind of a trailer. You can't compare the two.
im sure you all know by now but my uncles 96 300 I6 5 speed 3.55's and 33" tires pulls a 23' fifth wheel camper at highway speeds just fine...and up the remote logging roads, just fine...and sometimes with a small toy hauler trailer and a polaris 700 twin behind the camper, just fine
but pulling that load do yourself and the rest of us a favor and make sure your trailer brakes are working, a little old 1/2 ton was not setup to tow like that, it will pull it like nothing but stopping is another story and if you got any big hills to go down you could burn out your brakes then they will be peeling you off the pavement at the bottom of the hill with a large spatula
