FE 390 revival
FE 390 revival
In a short nutshell, i scrap my ratrod project mid summer, (pics in gallery) to build a hobby stock car. Got laid off in mid november, been working on two 351w for my buddys racecars and a lot of porting. His old lady and him are done and so his stuff is on hold.
I got to thinking 2nite and boredom, about putting my old 390 back together and maybe putting it in my 4wd. The truck currently has a stock slow 351m. I have a 400 shortblock and 460 but no money to freshen them up. I have my old 4x4 tranny and np205 and driveshafts from my old truck.
what we have
good .030 block
rods and pistons
cloyes ..220 roller
arp driveshaft
crane 901 and lifters
crane springs
stainless steel valves
c4se intake or a "t" model ( sold my rpm for mad mothers fine awhile ago)
670 and 750 holley but i want to run my 4100 mechical secondry carb.
crank is good and standard!
elgin hv oil pump and pickup for either oil pan
front sump and big ft oil pan
misc gaskets
hedman headers
needs
guides in heads and exhaust valve faces reground
4x4 oil pan
i only have standard rod bolts, kinda scary!
got some pics of headers and heads that i will put in gallery.
The heads are ported and you can see were i removed the hump casting on the roof on cylinders 3 and 6. The headers are opened up to fit the exhaust port, and i had the outside primary on the flange welded so that i could do that. Thats a real poorman's cj.

Matt, looks great, keep us posted on how your project comes along. You need to remember that those holes in the roof of ports 3 & 6 will see pressurized oil. You need some sealant on the bottom couple of threads on the bolts that go in those holes. If you don't, oil will slowly **** past the threads and into the ports. You'll get some detonation and oil fouled plugs in those holes. Go ahead, ask how I know ! I switched to studs for the rockershafts, put some sealant on the ones for 3 & 6 and zero problems after that. DinosaurFan
i used rtv, but only ran it about an hour like that. I kinda like the stud idea better. I really have wanted to get another cam for some time, i got the 901 back when the motor was a stock rebuild. It is good for a 4x4, but i like the newer lunati voodoo

I also was digging through jay browns old intake test, i remember that the "t" made more power than an "s" intake and the c4se mad 20 more peak hp than an "s" and he said it even beat the sp2p for lowend torque.
Looking for steal on ebay if i can find one.
