Hey,
Have 68 f100 and want to buy something used to just bolt in.
What engines will match up with no modification, just bolt in?
thanks,
dw
It depends on what you have now and what you want to use, just about any of the standard production engines of the '60s, '70s and early '80s will "bolt in". It's the accessories and electronics that will usually cause headaches for the average DIYer and most of them can be overcome here with the help of so many others that have been there and done that.
Ford was pretty good about making the engine mounts and mounting points of all thier cars and trucks interchangable. The 429/460 family of engines are plentiful in the bone yards that do not concentrate on the new stuff, so if you are looking for power and the sound that goes with it thats what I would look for.
I think that for a novice the best thing would be to look for a Granny or Grampa Lincoln, Mercury or Galaxy for a donor vehicle. You will be able to get nearly all the parts and components you need without countless trips to the bone yard and spending more money, in addition to being more user friendly to work on. If you find such a car you may be able to get all the service records with the car and be able to drive it before you buy it, not gonna happen in a bone yard.
Not sure, but I thought the perches were different between big and small block? Or are they just moved? Never converted from one to other so not sure.
Any motor will basically "fit" with minimal fuss, but depends on if you already have a tranny? Lots of room in these trucks, so size is not an issue.
Actually your right theres not only a difference between the small block windsors and FE blocks but also a difference between FEs and the 385 Series Big Blocks
(429 & 460) and most definitely different between any of these and the inline 6s

Uhhh... I don't know anything other than what I've read on FTE and this
is my impression...
The 300 inline 6 uses the same perches as the FE.
The 300 inline 6 has the same bolt pattern as the 351W and 302.

Right?
Wrong?
If wrong, what?

Actually the only bolt pattern that matches between a 300 and 302 or 351W is the transmission bolt pattern so that is correct. But the motor mounts aren't the same between a FE and a 300Cid straight 6 in 68 so I doubt seriously they are the same in any other year model either the parts numbers don't agree with that assessment part numbers are as follows 68 F100 300Cid Straight 6 #2332 same truck with a 390Cid FE #2290 this is something I've known for along time though I've been dealing with inlines and eights since I was 16 so nope motor mounts aren't the same so that parts incorrect

YeeeHaaaw!
Alvin was right about something on the FE/FT forum, write it on your calenders! :)

I actually wrote in "bell housing" but deleted it. Ooops. :/

Are those perch part-numbers or mount part-numbers?

I don't know the OP, but I believe he's asking a more basic question like...
"is this like a Chevy? " ;)
Answer:
No, it's a dangged Ford, and Ford never learned how to make the same part twice. :/
(that's what my Chevy buddies tell me ;)
Replace-with-same-for...
"just bolt in"

Reason: changed to a question instead of assuming they were mount numbers
the Motor Mounts themselves as far as I know motor mounts and engine perches are the same things to my knowledge unless your refering to something else

The driver's side perch is still in place showing its keyhole for easy assembly
at the factory. The "vulcanized rubber" mount's stud slips into that keyhole.
