I asked this question on another board, but haven't received a single answer. Maybe this is a better forum. I have a 95 F150 with 351W and E40D. I've already added a K&N FilterCharger, and noticed an immediate improvement in response and gas mileage. I'm so excited that I want to improve the exhaust next. Problem is, I don't know what or how. After reading lots of other comments, I think I want a 3-inch cat-back system. Only two seem to be available for my year and engine: Flowmaster and Gibson. Does anybody have any experience with either or both? I am admittedly lost here...

I have been researching exhaust and headers and i have decided to go with the Gibson single swept back system (3") hoping to have only a little sound and keeping the low end power. haven't made up my mind yet on a header==was going with Gibson for sure then someone mentioned JBA as being alot better so now i'm looking at them. good luck on what you decide.

Thanks, Predator1; you've confirmed my hunches. I, too, have been zeroing in on the Gibson 3" single swept-side cat-back system. Headers are out of reach for me right now, though. Where have you found the best deal on Gibson's?
right now the best is (central 4 wheel drive) at 399.00 for stainless steel,25. frt but i have others comming in
1 ultra perfromance==420. plus 26 frt
2 cool wheels com ==410. plus 20. frt
3truck performance com said they will beat any price
4 carpart com. said they will beat any price( has coupons==right now 15 % off of total.)
cool wheels com might beat any price too they have been the most aggressive in sales have sent me 3 e-mails and have been really helpful--last e-mail said they would meet any price.
waiting for a few more bids--let you know what i decide--i am in no hurry.

Predator1, I've done some calling, too. Unfortunately, I've found from one source that Gibson's single swept-side isn't made for my engine and year. So, Gibson SuperTruckII it is. So far, Stylin Concepts offers it (Model 9510) for $279.99 plus shipping, but I'm still looking.
You may not like the Super Truck. It is Boy-Racer loud compared to the Swept Side, and may cost you low or mid-range torque at the gain of high range power. If you're looking for QUIET performance check out the Flowmaster Series 70.
LAST EDITED ON 22-Apr-01 AT 10:13 PM (EST)[p]Hey, StrangeRanger, thanks! Like I said in my initial post, I'm woefully lost where exhausts are concerned. My wife would shoot me if I bought something too loud. I've done some more digging; what do you think about the Flowmaster Force II Cat-back system? My model would be the FLO-17135, selling right now at Summit Racing for $227.95. It appears to use a 50-series Delta Flow, which shouldn't be objectionable to wifey. Or do you think just a muffler like the 70- or 50-series Delta Flow would do the trick? Since my pipes are rusting pretty badly, I figured, "What the heck!" I was going to change it all out from the cat back.
I have a 1986 3/4 ton suburban with the 454 (last year in Ca. with no cat).
Out here,(in Ca.), the mufflers don't rust away , they slowly clog up with carbon and you just slowly lose the power without really noticing it.
I installed Doug Thorley headers (plumed for the air pump lines) and Flowmaster mufflers. WOW!!! What a difference! I'm not sure if its the performance stuff or just the fact that its new stuff or both. But WOW!
I got the 3 chamber mufflers from Flowmaster. I was told they are quiter than the 2 chamber. They sound good and I wouldn't want it louder.
It's been a couple years and everything is fine.
According to the techs at Flowmaster, the 70 series is significantly quieter INSIDE the cab than the Delta 50. There is no difference in performance. Your wife will probably like the 70 better though. There's an application guide for Flowmanster on their website and Summit carries a lot of FM stuff in stock that they don't catalogue and can get anything FM makes. Good luck.
I have the Force II system currently on my truck. It's almost as quiet as stock, except for between 2000-3000RMP where it has a nice deep low growl to it.
If you're looking for a more aggressive sound, Flowmaster offers an American Thunder system with a 40 Series muffler also. They have a 3" input and dual 2.5" outputs. The part #'s are:
Okay, guys, I did it! I settled on a Flowmaster cat-back system, FLO-17135, from Summit. Installed it in less than an hour; most of that time was consumed in cutting off the old system with a reciprocating saw. Quiet, low rumble until I stomp on the gas; then, WOW!!! Performance obviously better; don't quite understand how some have reported loss of low-end. My low-end is better, but then, I also have a K&N Filtercharger on the input, as well. Anyway, thanks to you all for the help; I greatly appreciate it!!!

Man, I musta gotten robbed! I got the FLO-17135 kit, and I didn't get any WOW!!! LOL

Tom, I had a 1990 F-250 with a 351 in it. I put a Gibson 3 inch catback system on it. What a difference ! I would go with the Gibson. My 2001 F-350 PDS is in their shop right now getting a FREE exhaust system installed, I pick it up on Thursday.
