Yup, I did plugs, coil pak, wires, and new paper filters. With the smell and the rich start ups I suspect something in the vapor management system. Or maybe the gas in the vacume line of the fuel preasure regulator is going somewhere. May folks out this way know deal with it more have it figured out. I'll find out tomorrow.
Never say never but there are afforadable rooms to be had, not a holiday weekend coming up and a few days for folks ta work on it afore the weekend. So I plan to do what I can to get it running. I did check the oil this mornin and it's full so there is something else going on. There are at least 4 shops in town. two auto parts places and I'm right off of I-25. Larry has a bunch of folks backing out on the San Juans as the weather is said to be a little wet. I didn't really care much about the San Juans (been there done that fer 30 year) and I just came totag along with Larry next week.
Just need to see if the codes are still in it. And maybe these guys out this way have seen this before and can fixit.
Course I could always drive home at night when it is cooler.
OH if you have a bad PCV valve it lets hot oil on your Air intake temperature sensor-- making it run rich, throw codes, and have no power-- Believe me I know this one!
You can remove the sensor and clean it, change the <$10 PCV valve and be on your way. It mostly does it when it is warm! (worth a shot anyway)
I doesn't run rich going down the road. Just smell that caustic fuel smell. Then when I shut it off it seems to dump fuel in the engine or where it gets in the engine when I try to start it. The shutting off thing I have no idea. But I'll let the shop know.
If I was gonna through parts at it I would replace the canister and preasure regulator. And a new fuel filter. But I can't even see the regulator let alone mess with it.
Took it to the guy the motel recomended. His code reader didn't pull a code. He changed the fuel filter. Then when he pulled the air box top to check the air filter he lost the nuts and broke the heater hose off going into the valve. So he used a plastic union to connect the two hoses and I don't have a heater any more. He replaced the air filter and said I should be good. I called another guy and have the room for another night. He is a Ford guy or so he says. Says he has a biger mo better scanner. Went to the parts store to get the nuts the first guy lost. on the way to the second guy. Got those installed so the air box is sealed again. When I got to the second shop the union that was used to connect the heater hose was leaking. Not sure it's goona hold up for that. It was white threaded plastic and looked too soft/thin. The ones I use are gray or black. The guy talked to me and was getting busy. Can't get to it today but can tomorrow. So I'm back im my kinda cool room. No AC just a water cooler but not bad. And I have cable. I feel a nap coming on.
K. Here is the deal as of last night. Green is in the shop gettin worked on as it did not like the steep 4x4 climbs and 70mph highway speeds in 103 temps. If it gets fixed I may go back out to the San Juans Labor Day weekend with folks over on Rick's dite. After that I may meet up with Larry in Alamosa to finish where we left off last month folowing the Rio Grande to the border. Then meet an old friend in Arizona near Jacobs Lake and try to pre run the Temple and Honeymoon trails and other stuff.

I read 2 really odd things that can cause overheating-- a warn fan belt (sepentine belt), or the wrong weight of oil--- Just never thought of those 2 things as causing overheating.
K, this is the deal. There is a run Labor Day weekend in the San Juans. After that there is either a south trip that starts in Alamosa, CO on the 9th or another guy will be in the Breckenridge/Leadville area the 10th. After that is the Arizona thing starting the 14th. Looks like I'll be taking Jr. for this. Any takers?
I got no vacation days left, and only a couple sick days. Wife says I can't take any non paid days off work, she claims it is because we can't afford it, but I think its because she has her eye on something expensive.
