I have a 1997 f-350 dually with a john wood E4OD and bigger tranny cooler w/ amsoil atf since new. Same problem twice now. 1K miles after installation tranny would not shift out of 2nd gear. no codes, no flashing O/D light. problem cleared by itself in 48 hours. John surmised that may be some trash got stuck in the throttle body.
Now 14k miles later on my way to work today I accelerated full throttle through 1st, got a hard shift into second and let off. Then it would not shift out second gear into 3rd. fluid is full, pretty, and not hot. o/d light IS flashing but Autozone found no codes. Any help?????? Please! I have to get home tonight (45min drive).
That sucks. If it were a turbo hydro 350 I'd say the vacuum line fell off. I would think along the lines of junk in the fluid. Possibly disconnect the batteries for awhile to eliminate the electronics.
I replace my E40D last September and had a similar problem. Turns out the switch on the gear selector shaft on the tranny was bad. I would call it a neutral safety switch but Ford has a different name for it. It has resistors in it which tell the computer what gear it is in as in: park, reverse, drive, etc. If it is bad it won't shift right if at all because it doesn't know what gear it is in. That may not be your problem but a good place to check. If your reverse lights don't work or it will start in reverse or drive I would say that is the problem. That is what was wrong with mine anyway. Maybe a place to check.
Autozone cannot read trans codes.
You need to pull the codes this will help
JW solve your issue. When the codes are
pulled they will be able to clear them.
This will take the trans out of limp mode.
It will allow you to drive in normal mode until
the next time of failure.
The 97 E4 has the digital range sensor not the early
analog sensor that has resistors.
