Frame swaps
Alec
I havent measured the frame width at that point to see if you can use the pickup crossmember, as I dont plan on using stock mounting on my 4x4 project.
I use propane for fuel on it and am moving the tank above the frame rail behind the cab and chop the rear rails to reduce rear overhang to the bare minimum
none of my info from here on in is going to help someone trying to make a nice driver, just thought I could help a bit as I had the same parts going together
extremely simple to work on, far more simple then a gasoline carberator

first you start with the long box, (this image was grabbed off google i have no idea whos truck it is, but it is a nice truck!, if ya own or know the truck drop me line on here

this is the way the previous owner of my truck shortened the box
he cut the shaded part which leaves a seam
and he did a poor job lining up the body lines

you see it will leave a seam that you have to hide, well thats half the battle with this way of cutting the box, you also have to make darn sure you go the center dent and body lines lined up perfect!

now this is the way you shorten any truck box! when you cut the shaded area off you simply fold the panel leading edge like the factory did and weld it to the front box wall, then your done! no seam to hide! and no matching body lines!

here is what the long box looks cut down to short box length, mind you this is a quick chop in windows paint, this cut is not 100 percent correct to scale

here is a even shorter version, this is just for fun, this is what a bronco short box would be

i don't think this is a very hard project to do, i just wanted to mention this before you run into a problem, hope my advice helps, and i know this advice may seem simple, but it wasn't simple enough for the previous owner of my truck
and now i got some fixing to do!

Alec
well you could even cut a rare short box down to the shorter box (bronco box) but i highly recommend cutting down a common long box
you will have to do some measuring since you can't go by a regular short box length, you are creating something completely custom, you will either have to find some one else who has done the same thing to a dentside 73-79 ford truck or you will have to crunch the numbers and do some measuring, and always measure 3 times then cut!
you can measure a 100 times but you can't undo a cut!
if ya need any more help just ask, i am sure there is other members who will chime in any time (next 1-3 days)
all the best with your project and it looks like it won't be that hard, also when you cut the box it might me a smart idea to weld in a brace going from the drivers side to the passenger side, long piece of simple angle iron will work good, just to keep the box square, good luck and make sure you post pictures in this thread!

L2 = inside cargo area of box
6-3/4 box = 80.72
8 box = 96.92
L6 = cab to rear axle CL
6-3/4 box = 40
8 box = 56.20
both styles show 46.55 from rear axle CL to back of box
1977f150xlt is spot on I would say
and thanks for posting the distances in front of the rear axle, i did not have those numbers, thanks for showing the exact measurement behind the rear axle, i have ran into a good number of people who think you have to cut the front and back of the box to get a short box? i like to correct them, because a lot of people will either not attempt a easy box cut because they think its too much work, or they will start cutting and mess up like my trucks previous owner! any ways thanks for adding the measurements!
i will write those measurements down for future use!
