Mirror replacement

Hello All,

I have a 01 f-250 superduty lariat with electric non tow mirrors. I just bought a set of newer (not sure of the year) non tow but has heated and turn signal lights in them. I would like to swap them out. I know that the newer mirrors have the square plug. I'm not sure what mine has yet since I haven't taken it apart yet. I would like to know what I will be up against before trying to tackle the job. Has anyone done this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ron

Thanks for the reply. Any chance in your opinion that your excursion has the same wiring for the mirrors as my F-250 since they are the same year?

Thanks,

Ron

You have two options - (1) cut off the plugs and splice the wires together directly, or (2) go to the junkyard (or big $$$ from the Ford dealer) and get a set of plugs that fit your mirrors.

If you change to flat plugs, look for an Excursion of the same year that had heated power mirrors with signals. There are other Fords that use the same plug. Take your new mirrors to the junkyard with you. Many times the staff knows just which wrecks will have plugs that will match up. These are Deutsch Connectors. You can get terminals to solder or crimp on to the wires from Pico. These connectors can be taken apart easily to replace the terminals. Notice that your flat plugs have a red plastic piece in the middle. If you pry that out a little bit, you can pull it out with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Once the retainer is out, you can pry the terminals toward the center gap and pull them out the back (toward the wires).

2001 Power Mirror Wiring (Marker, Signal, Ground and Heat from Excursion):

Door UP/Down In/Out Common Marker Signal Ground Heat
Left Dk.Blue Red YE BR LG/WT BK DG/VT
Right VT DG YE BR WH/LB BK DG/VT I do not have these in the order that they mount in the plug, but your mirrors will indicate that. Later Models have different colors for some wires. Search "mirrors" in forums for posts that give color codes. Or post your colors so other members can help identify them.

I hope this helps!

My reply did not print out like it showed in the post window. You will have to match the color codes to the function by counting over. I don't know if this system will let me make a table. I typed out as a table in the posting window!

Unfortunately, the kit for heated mirrors + signal was not introduced until the 2003 year model. Unless you have a conversion kit for your 1999-2002 you won't be able to just install the '03 to '07 signal mirrors. You'll be able to mount them, but the LED signals and heated wont work.

I have a 1999 F350 and I'm trying to find a way to a get a conversion kit, so I can install the auto/heated/signal mirrors on my '99 superduty king cab dually.

Thanks for the replies. Powerstroke, nothing is wrong with my stock mirrors. the reason for replacement is so that I can have the heat and blinkers.

Thanks,

You could also fit your round plugs to the proper wires, then use insulated bullet or spade connectors to hook up the three wires you need for heat and blinkers (heat, blinker, ground). I cut the old plug off my son-in-law's 99 CC and soldered it on to a newer mirror to get him going again.

I'm just curious why the OP didn't go with tow mirror for a replacement if going to all the trouble...they look so much better.

The reason why is that I bought these replacements for 30.00 for the pair and they are in excellent condition.

One thing you might consider if you install heated mirrors is to put a switch on it to turn the heat off and on. In the rain the heated mirrors get real dirty from the water mixed with road grime splashing on the mirrors, then the water evaporates which leaves the road grime.
