Engine Swap Question from a Newbie

I think that I did some pretty thorough searching of the forums for an answer to my forthcoming questions, but did not seem to find the info that I was looking for. Hopefully, I didn't just miss the answer as I was looking through the archives.

The questions all revolve around a 1952 F-5 that has a hydraulic dump bed and the 4 speed hi/lo switch tranny.

Anyway, on to the questions.

1. I would like to put a bigger motor in the truck. The motor in it is a complete turd, and barely gets out of it's own way. I think it is worn out, so it would need a rebuild anyway. So.....I have a 360 or 390 available for use. I assume that I can find a way to fabricate mounts and stuff to put the motor in there, right?

2. If yes to #1, is it even remotely possible to have it mate up to the existing tranny? As it is the original tranny and stuff, I would like to leave it in there if possible.

3. If no to #2, would I be able to get a tranny that is compatible with an FE that would be tough enough to handle a full load on the F-5?

4. If yes to #3, will it still work with the existing hydraulic pump for the dump bed?

an FE motor will fit, sure. Mated to the existing tranny? good question, probably gonna need an adapter of sorts or drilling new holes in the bellhousing of the FE, and match the flywheel, pilot bushing, input shaft splines, throwout bearing etc... An NP435 tranny 4 speed may hold up. They were used in later big trucks. As for the hyd. pump, the question I have is how is it driven?

Your truck will certainly support a 360 - 390 or any FE - I have a 390- in my 51. Same frame size as an F1.

But htere are of course certain adjsutments and sacrifices. I don't think you want to put an FE and match it to the stock transmission. It's too tall in the back and the engine angle would be pretty extreme The FE is going to sit higher and farther back relative to the firewall than the engine you have now. A C6 would be a good transmission for your truck for an automatic or the 4 speed Havi recommended.

Is your hydraulic pump electric or mechanically driven?

I have had experience with the 390 placement ie exhaust and motor mounts and have tons of picutres. What you want to do is completely do able. Here is a picture of some custome fab motor mounts in an F1 with a 390 PI:

Feel free to write anytime.

And again -Welcome to FTE

I wouldl suggest a 4 or 5 speed tranny out or a later big truck(f600-f700) that had an FE in it and one that also had a hoist or provisions for a PTO for the hydralic pump. If you could find a truck at a salvage yard that had a 360 or 390 etc that would be the way to go. You might get lucky and find a decent FE and tranny together.

i got a fe and the corresponding bellhousing etc. from a 70 3/4 ton i parted { completely rusted out on me } and it's i believe t-18 heavy four speed , that i was going to use in my 55 f350 . all the later 4 gears of the big variety and the early ones have the same opening in the right side and use the same bolt pattern for the pto you use to drive the hydraulic pumps etc. i'd be willing to bet if you look and yours has a pto and find any other 4 speed you'd find they are too . i have a t-98 in my 53 from the original 239 y block in my 55 , behind my flatty , and it and the t-18 and a couple others i or a freind have use the same cover and bolt pattern .so shouldnt be a problem to make it work , and there are lots af swap kits out there for what your doing . many advertised in our sponsors catalogs .

One thing I forgot to mention was the F5 came with a synchro-silent (2nd-4th) 4 speed as an option. If this is what you have, you may want to consider using it, or atleast save it for someone else who may want it (like me) Also keep in mind the parking brake on the back of the trans. Otherwise the NP435, T-18/19 all have PTO provisions. I believe yours would be on the driver side.
