Hi Dave How have you been? Been away for awhile myself. Yes That is a gear vendor unit I just put it in a month ago. It is a lot of fun to drive a NINE speed. I had the core from my previous truck )'87 6.9l IDI) so that made it financially possible. I'll tell you something interesting about it. On the first road trip with my family and the new gear vendor (bad clutch vibration at 2400RPM) I wouyld've had to turn around if I didn't have the gear splitter. It made it possible to stay outa that RPM band and saved the vacation.......I just realized I think I posted this to the wrong forum. It was supposed to go in the 94.5-97 Powerstroke forum. This truck is a '96 I sure miss my good ol'87 though. Neither one has ever left me stuck. Had to limp back home a time or 2. but never stuck!
That looks just like the transmission jack that I recently acquired to do some R&R on my transmission. Does it have the wheel you turn to raise and lower it and another crank to tilt it? I am wondering how well it is going to work for me, it looks like a pretty old unit.
It worked real well for me. It has a gimble plate with tip/tilt screws to help you align your input shaft and bolts when it's time for reassembly. It is a definite must have. make sure you tie down the Tranny real good before it comes out. Ratchetting tie downs work good. especially if yours has a transfer case. I rented mine from a local rental yard
yeah I thought it would be smart to hang onto my old one-get this- I bought my good old '87 for $3500 with the gear vendor in it, it came with the stock tailhousing for the C-6, used it till I wore it out, went and bought a junkyard driveshaft, put it back to stock and sold the truck for $3500 thus giving me a FREE core for my new truck yay!
Jack,
Are you able to split 1st gear with the ZF? I was looking at the GV site and they weren't showing ratio splits for that gear. Not sure if it was an omission or if they figure no one would use it.
What have you seen for mileage gains?
NOPE no first gear gotta be goin' about 20 mph before you've got enough oil pressure to make it do what it do. The real benefit is cruising at about 85 at 2000 RPM. I don't have any hard number for mileage gains cuz I'm having to much fun leaving 'em behind me. I was able to get from Bishop to Escondido on one tank though doin' 85 most of the way!
