Well, I don't know why the TTB would need to be beefed up, just asking. Where I take my Bronco a town may be 30 to 40 miles away. So reliability is the biggest thing for me as I'm sure it is for most people. I don't know much about the TTB but it sounds like the thing to do is buy a quality lift, set everything else up the way I listed above and go out and have fun.
Helirich,
I'll look into the Powertrax for the rear. I like what you said about not upgrading the TTB, if I break something it's cheap and I drive home in 3-wheel.
What locker do you have up front and what do you think of the Truetrack?
I have a lock right in front. It works good, but it is terrible on road. I was thinking, it would be good to upgrade the inner u-joint to the best quality because that one would be a pain to brake. But I have to admit, I have never broken that one.
The trutrac is a good limited slip and has good manners on road. But it has clutches that can ware out. I had a Scout with one and got in a situation where one tire was forced in to the fender and locked. (I didnt put droped bump stops after a raise) When I stumped the pedal, I smoked the clutches in a matter of minutes. If I had a locker I would have stalled the engine. That would have been better. I had to winch off anyways.
I know I'm pushing the limits with 38's on a Dana 44, but I dont think theres much differnce wether its a TTB or straight 44 as far as strenth is concerned. Ive had pretty good luck. Every time I've broken the front joints, they've been in there a few years. One time I went to get a buddy out and broke both front joints. I had to leave him there (his truck) and barly made it out myself. I replaced the joints the next day. I came back out and towed him out. I really romped on the Bronco doing it and didnt brake anything except a tow hook. I pulled so hard I straightend it out like a spike.
Wow, you straightend out the hook. Man, now I really think what I'm planning will work well. I see that you're running PJ's how do you like them? That tire is at the top of my list. I think I will go with 35x12.50's do to cost. Are they pretty good all around?
I have Superlift. It works well. I think all the name brand lifts are probubly good. I wore out two sets of P/G's and I really like them. Good in mud, dirt and on road. But I got a job where I drive 400 miles every two weeks. The P/G's get a little noisy at 70. So I got M/T ATZ's now. They are very good on road for a big tire, but dont have the grip off road. Theres trade offs for everything. The only thing I can say is dont get anything from Super Swampers unless its strickly offroad.
if you want to run a cheap but reliable locker look into the Aussie locker. they have a lifetime warranty and if you were to break one they dont flip out due to tire size like some lunchbox locker companies. if you get a lift, get the extended radius arms, and either go with dual AAL's for the back or a new leaf pack. dont run blocks
