Question Initial timing tdc compression or exhuast stroke?

I put a new distributor in my 1981 351W and am trying to set the initial timing. Is there an easy way to know if when I set the timing mark to 10 degrees btdc if it is on the compression or exhaust stroke?

Distributor is indexed to TDC of piston 1 on the compresion stroke. Both valves will be closed, so if you hold your finger over the spark plug hole you will feel air being pushed out as the piston raises. Use a small piece of wire in the hole to feel when the piston reaches TDC, the timing mark on the crank should then be at 0. Insert the distributor so the rotor faces post #1 on the cap when it's fully inserted, and set final base timing with the motor idling and ignition advance disabled.
