I'm looking at the pics and dont see a lot of fluid lost.. possible it wasnt checked serviced in a long time and ran low on lube? heated up and took itself out?
Nice to see what the outcome will be when you get it open. I've blown up a few rear diffs from 4x4 but never seen one take out the housing. Thats some think steel to go through.

I think it is possible the PO never used it. That might have been the first time it was ever engaged and as you said the fluid may have been low. It looks like 1/4" steel!
