You ought to hear it with an eight inch tip! This one actually is slightly megaphone shaped and probably is nine inch at the opening. The ten 5/16" holes in the muffler back plate give it a nice mellow sound, but needed a bit more on the freeway so I widened two holes to 1/2' and it even sounds better. Really barks when you blip the throttle. Lots of popping on deceleration.

whatkind of s#^t rig is that. My prefrence is to get rid of all big a$$ ugly tips. All they are there for is making a lot of raket. If you want to make raket why don't you just build a motor that will sound insted of slapping on some tips. I have a 390 that has 40 series flows and it makes enough noise to set off car alarms when idling around parking lots. just my 2 cents.

What difference if you make racket with a small engine and a big tip or a big engine and flowmaster 40s? The bottom line is sound quality and owner satisfaction. For no money at all I have made my stock muffler on my stock 300 I6 so I can hear it run (and I got the benefit of reduced back pressure for longer engine life). I am sick of having this truck sound like an automobile (e.g., quiet). The holes made it louder, but gave it a bad muffler sound. The tip, shroud, or whatever crispened up the sound so it sounds like a truck. What it looks like dosen't matter because the only one who sees it is someone who crawls under the truck. The tip at the end of the exhaust pipe is stock. I don't want it so loud as a hot rod, because it is not. And I hate hearing car alarms, so don't want to set them off. Your 390 sounds like a nice truck--enjoy!

What did you do to the 390 to make it loud other than the 40 series? Sounds like you just wanted the sound too by using a race application muffler. I have built mine somewhat, mild, though still built a bit. 86 F-250 HD 4x4, 351W, Edelbrock Performer aluminum intake, Edelbrock 650 4bbl carb, Extreme 4x4 cam, MSD 6A ignition & Blaster coil, Flowmaster 30 series triple chamber true dual with custom headers. No cats, just straight from the collector to the muffler to the tips. And yes, I did use two 3.5" slashed chrome tips side swept before the passenger rear wheel. And I set off alarms everywhere I go. It is extrememly loud, you can hear me coming from the end of my street which is a 1 1/2 mile country road through the woods. I personally like the look of the big slashed chrome tips. And the sound is great too. And Tall Paul, that is some ingenuity you go there to rig that up. Glad you're happy with it. Like I said in the other post, I'm pretty sure it's the same idea as a kid howling through a cardboard paper towel tube. Well done sir
Ryanstruck: I think you would make a great forum moderator. Hey, sounds like you and Jwtimme both have sweet trucks. I would love to have a hot rod Ford pickup too, but alas, like only a mother can love an ugly child, I can't bear to part with my straight six .
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-01 AT 02:21 PM (EST)]Thanks TallPaul. I would hardly consider my truck a hot rod. I mean, sure, it's big, it's loud, and for a 250 HD it is fast as a bat outta hell off the line. I got 4.11's that just got that great low end power to push me past the V-Techs and long grain rice out there. I am a big fan of the 351W myself. I have no problems at all finding the parts I need. It's a great engine to work on, you can really squeeze some power out of that. I had her dynoed at 320 hp at the flywheel, not sure about rear wheel. Not too bad considering stock I believe the 351W was something like 230 hp at the flywheel (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, which I'm sure I'm off by some on those numbers). And all my mods were relatively inexpensive. The most being the exhaust which total with pipes from the collectors back, muffler and two tips was $350. The Edel 600 4bbl carb was only $200 from a local speed shop here. I spend probably under $700 on performance mods and got significant gain. And let me tell ya, the truck is pretty ugly. I mean, she's come along way, when I first got her she was all rusted, some rot, different color panels. I just cleaned her up, put a fresh coat of primer grey on, slapped on a push bar and some nice offroading lights and boom, She looked 1000 times better, but still not quite there.
