Cool white smoke, high mile motor

Truck I recently aquired smokes excessively throughout the whole RPM range. Truck is a '97 F350 with 364,000 miles and cam to me with some parts missing and coolant in the oil.

Sofar I rebuilt the oil cooler, replaced the vacuum pump, replaced a missing IPC plug, checked waterpump, replaced CPS, new batterier and fixed a bunch of cut wires.
I have yet to drop the oil and replace it to see if coolant is still leaking into it. Or take it for a good run to see if the smoke clears up, but somehow I dont think it will. I have had the temp guage about 1/4 of the way to normal (straight up) and smoke does not diminish. Headgaskets were done shortly before I bought it.

It also starts real hard and I have new GPs going in tomorrow.

What would be the most likely causes for the white smoke?
- injector O-rings?
- injector sleeves?
- injector washer? (or cup...little copper washer under injector)
- worn, leaky injector (s)?
- cracked head?

you need to stop running it with coolant in the oil, that coolant is traveling through the injectors as well, it will destroy them and can cause the white smoke.

it could be low compression too. but first get rid of the contaminated oil

I dumped the oil it came with and filled it with fresh stuff. I ran it for a bit, less than an hour, to flush the water/antifreeze out and the oil is cloudy again. Will dump that tomorrow when I do the GPs.
Then I'll know if it still leaks coolant into the oil.

I know the injectors are oil fired, but how would the contaminated oil make it smoke? Would the contamination affect pressure? Anything else?

Just got back from the shop..... and I think I found the problem(s).

4 injectors are missing the middle O-ring. Which should separate the oil from the coolant.
These are the left side ones:

both middle cylinders, on both sides, are the ones missing the o-ring.

Injector with o-ring (screwdriver pointing ot it):

and without:

And this is the inside of the valve cover....

and also this :

rearmost valve on the driver side.....

looks to me like whoever did the headgasket, let the apprentice put it back together and somehow the o-rings were left off some injectors.

Next steps:
replace pushrod, roll the engine and check valvetrain.
send injectors out to get tested and if need be, rebuilt.

I guess this is what happens when you send your diesel to a garage that has no clue about them.

What is that inside the cover? Looks like foam insulation.

hehe, thats what my buddy said also... funny thins is we work in a steel building thats insulated with just that kind of sprayed foam insulation...
The stuuf oin the valve cover is actually coolant and oil foam...

oh my, looks like you found lots of problems...... inspect your injector cups really well for damage.

this is the inside of the shop i get to work is.... insulation resemblance to the foam is uncanny.

Yeah, I'll price the cups tomorrow, if reasonable I'll just change them. But what kind of damage should I look for. Scratches I guess. Anything else?

No bats yets, but is definitely feels like a cave.

It was late when I posted the above and I thought I had found the problem for the coolant to oil leak, but correct me if I am wrong.....

There are 3 O-rings onthe injector fuel is sealed in by the top and middle ones and oil is sealed in by the middle and bottom ones, correct?

If so then a missing or damaged middle o-ring will allow fuel and oil to mix but coolant should not be involved at all.

This would mean I still have not found my coolant leak......

Anothe interesting thing I observed last night is that a few minutes after I pulled the first injector (second from the rear drivers side(#6??)) it the injector hole filled with coolant.

(poor pic, but you can see the coolant in the bore)

I drained the rad before continuing with the other injectors.
Since I am not familiar with PSDs I am at a loos where the coolant came from.

Does the sleeve, #9 in the schematic, sit in the water jacket?

If so, a cracked one would cause the coolant to flow into the injector hole I suppose.

I am also reluctant to suspect the head gasket, as it was recently done, although by an inexperienced shop, and i dont seem to have excessive pressure in the cooling system.

Thoughts?
