there has been an 85 86 tailagte trim panel on ebay for a while for $60. It wasnt too shabby either, a few smalle dents im sure but nothing major. ill see if i can find it
The 97 is a whole new body style, and the F250 didn't have the finish panel.I have seen 92-96 Finish Panels with Blue Ovals instead of letters.
The 92-96 Finish Panels you saw with the Blue Ovals were made for the Broncos and the oval is on the the left side (the spare tire would be on the right side with the "Bronco" tire cover). The F150 had the same panel but used LETTERS on the right side.
What about newer trucks? Ive seen a lot that have tailgates similar to it, cant think in my head whats different.
Besides the coloring, the 1985 - 1986 Finish Panel is completely different from the others because of the tailgate handle location. The 1985 - 1986 Finish Panel had a cutout for the tailgate handle. The tailgate was redesigned in 1987 and the handle was placed further up on the tailgate itself so the cutout was not needed. The newer panels were straight at the top.
1980 - 1984: Smaller panel, FORD letters stretched across the entire panel, trim designation on lower right corner.
1985 - 1986: Larger panel, red ribbed strip at the bottom, FORD letters on the right side, cutout for tailgate handle.
1987 - 1991: Same size panel as 1985-1986, but no cutout for tailgate handle. Red smooth strip at the bottom, FORD letters still on right side but the letters were redesigned to match the script used from 1987 - 1991.
1992 - 1996: Same as 1987 - 1991, except a black smooth strip at the bottom, and the FORD letters were redesigned yet again.

I know they came on Broncos, but I saw one on an F150.And it didn't have the key hole for the Rear window either. Is it possible to take the black strip from a Bronco finish panel and put it on an F150 finish panel?A fellow redneck owned the truck,so I wouldn't be suprised if that's what he did.And also, any of ya'll who have an NPD catalog,if you look at the section with the 87-96 body side moldings, you'll see they list and have a picture of the 87-91 Panel with the letters, and a 92-96 Panel, with a Blue oval, and no keyhole.lol.That's what confused me.

Ok so what do I have its no letter no oval no 350 just smooth like burshed SS
It sounds like the red strip on your finish panel came off. It's actually pretty common.
If it did it came off clean no glud reds or holes and its a F150 dont know why I put 350 (dam drug flash backs I sure hope no one trys to tell me the 60s ids over again)

My dad's red strip started to come off his finish panel on his 87,and if I remember correctly, when he took it off,it came off pretty easy with no glue residue.
The 85-86 is flat, where the 87-96 Panels are a "raised" design. Also,I believe the 85-86 had different letters than the 87-91.87-91 panels had a red strip, while 92-96 had a black strip.I'm not too sure on this, but I think some of the black strips had letters, but alot of the ones I see have a blue oval.
80-86 trucks had the tailgate handle lower than the 87-96 trucks, the handle cuts into the panel on 85-86 trucks.
