I have a 2007 FX4 Reg Cab and I replaced the plugs yesterday. I put the Champions in it. I took all day, waiting for the spray to seep in, 1/4 turning the plugs, takings all the usual precautions and they came out without to much difficulty. They were definitely tight and squeeled a lot but I just couldn't have this problem hanging over my head anymore. I only had 17K on the truck and it's a shame I felt I had to do them early but poor design forces you to do things before you should sometimes.
I've got 10K on my Champions, and the '05 runs like a clock (except when an injector goes bad!). I didn't notice any difference from the factory Motorcraft plugs. I have an Edge programmer set at level 3 and use premium gas.
isnt the dreaded spark plug issue only for the 5.4 3 valve?
Ford has had problems before the 3v engine with plugs blowing out the head. The problem with the 3v plugs, at least until they went with another plug in late 2007, was carbon build up along the plug below the threads, which is a good inch or so. The plug is a two piece design and can break inside the head (below the threads) if the carbon build up is too bad. Champion makes a one piece plug which should not break on removal. Combine the OEM plug with lots of miles and you're sure to have a problem when it comes time to change them. There is a TSB on changing the plugs to minimize breakage. Anyone contemplating a change should get hold of it. It may already be posted somewhere here.
