Okay I am not the smartest person when it comes to exhaust but I need someone who is. I have a 1996 Ford Explorer Sport with 4x4 and I need some exhaust. I dont want the loudest exhaust in the world but I want something mellow that sounds good and I need something to give a little more power as well. So I am gonna ask the wonderful guys and girls that own a Ford to help me.
All kinds of different opinions as far as this goes. You can always purchase an aftermarket muffler and have a local exhaust shop install it, and fit custom tailpipe(s), also. Check out some of the other posts to get an idea of what kind of muffler you think you'd like. There are many, many opinions. Keep in mind that the catalytic converter will quiet anything you install down a bit, and there is no guarantee that a homegrown (aftermarket muffler with locally fabricated tailpipe) will improve gas mileage that much, though it will probably show some gain. You may be better off to stick with a complete system, which will typically boast some sort of power / mileage gain figures (although they are a bit more expensive than going the "make your own system" route.)
