'92 ford explorer issues

I need help. I have a '92 ford explorer, 4x4 eddie bauer ed., my check engine light came on, it sometimes stalls when braking or stopping at lights, it is blowing something black out of the exhaust and smells strong....could it be a clogged catalytic converter, and if so, where do i find it and how do i fix it?

Allajah, this could be answered better in the Explorer forum. The first thing to do is get the trouble code(s) read. You can do it yourself with a paper clip.

Then post the code, and we'll help you. I doubt if it's the catalytic converter. Sounds like it's running too rich. Could be several things, but the code will indicate where to start.
