Just wondering if the 5 inch systems make a bit more power or sound any better than the 4 inch systems. I would assume the tone is a little bit deeper with the bigger pipe. ThanksJason
I have heard that unless your tractor pulling all the time then a 4 inch is all you really need. I have also heard that the 5 and 6 inch systems actually hurt you because of turbo lag and it not spinning up as fast. can anyone second this motion?
The only difference is complexity of installation, and a bit of a sound difference. Not sure where the story of spooling problems came from. Lag comes from the exhaust HOUSING being large, not the exhaust after the turbo. A 4" system will suit you fine -- there are occasional difficulties with the 5" installation.
With the Magnaflow kit is is a 4" down pipe till about half cab (on a crew cab) then it is 5" the rest of the way back. The only tight spot I found was by the spare tire. I just took it out because it is pretty much useless with 37" tires. Another note, the inside of the muffler is only 4" also, another reason why I didn't install it.
Yeah, I know. Some folks have no problems, others have to cut bolts off or move the spare with the 5". I almost bought one, but a buddy of mine talked me out of it. So I spent the same money and got a 4" SS system instead. LOL....
I have an MKO 5 inch. Install was a breeze, and it gives you a really nice deep tone. i don't think that I encountered a single tight spot other than the spare. But with a little adjustment, it fit just fine through area with the spare tire.
I have the magnaflow 5" exhaust on mine. I had it installed instead of doing it myself so I can't comment on how tight it is. I didn't really don't notice any more noise in the cab unless I tow a trailer. When I tow mine it is quite a bit louder in the cab. But if standing outside of the truck you can hear the turbo spool up a bit louder, sounds pretty good. As far as any mechanical benifits I am told it help the engine breathe easier and keeps temps a bit cooler. But hey maybe someone was just blowing smoke up my pipe.
Not trying to hijack the thread here, but I've been wondering about larger exhaust systems too.
What performance difference occurs after you install a 4" or 5" exhaust from a stock setup? Would the 4" or 5" exhausts lower the back pressure? Does the motor rev quicker at slower speeds? Does it improve fuel consumption efficiency when accompanied by a better intake setup? Would you need to turn up your fuel to compensate for the increased air?
I am interested in going to the 6637 filter and a larger exhaust, but only to improve efficiency if possible. My truck is a work truck with ~1500lbs in the bed. It's not a toy, it makes me money.
The 5" system is just for a different sound, and to say "I have the 5" system". LOL....
No performance differences, and the turbo is the source of all back pressure at the motor, once you open up the exhaust with either size system. In the stock system, the muffler and to some extent the crappy non-Mandrel bent piping is the source of the restriction. Once you go with a 4"+ turbo-back Mandrel bent system, there is very little restriction after the turbo, which is what you want.
