I still like the classic look of the 102" steel whip off the back... I have mine mated to my Cobra 148GTL with Am, and upper and lower sidebands Works great...
LOL it doesnt fit in the picture... I will get some better pics of it and my CB tomorrow
im running a uniden grant in 3 of my trucks and i have a shelf of cb's at the shop lol have a few other cbs in different vehicles. antenna tuning makes the biggest impact on how its gonna work ive seen 20 dollar cb's do better than 300 dollar cb's with the right antenna
Hey guys I was just thinking 'bout CBs today. Just got a couple of questions and I hope you guys can chime in(Izzy!!??). When I drive truck for my friend I have a hoot on CB so I figure I'll throw one in the truck. He's got a Cobra 29 NW sitting in the shop I'll ****** from him. I'm just wondering how to wire these things up. Is it as simple as power to the CB, and than wire the antennas to the CB? Also curious about where the sound is going to come from? I know CBs on these older trucks will have their own little speaker, but now they wire them directly into the truck speakers?? How does one go about putting the CB through the truck sound system? Or is it a bad idear? And I see you guys have these huge RC car whips lol. I was looking at two 4' whips, one for each fender by the mirror. 4' too small? Cheers boys
The Cobra 29 NW has a built in speaker.... They also have a 1/8" speaker out put jack on the back... I wouldnt recommend hooking it to your sound system just because thats for listening to music and having static and or talking coming through would/could be annoying.. Just get yourself an external speaker with a 1/8" plug on it and run it... or just use the built in speaker.
That is neat Joe, really like the weather feature. As for the CB, when my cell phone can tell me when theres an accident up ahead and i need to reroute around it, i'll retire it to the basement, i know, GPS. Being a truck driver myself, its also nice to help out a lost driver find his or her destination along with any problems they might not be able to see, loose tarp, blown tire, open trailer door ect, ect. As for family vacations, i only put it on low (if i need to), the language isn't good sometimes with little ones in the back.
I know what you mean about the language! My kids have got an ear full a few times.
It's nice to hear it from a truckers side, we have always found that they are helpful in giving alternate routs and letting us know if something is wrong with the trailer, but I sure noticed less cooperation when all of the guys where hauling the FEMA trailers down south. The truckers really were ticked off about that

Why were the truckers ticked at the FEMA haulers, in and out of traffic flying ??? Also, my antennas are mounted on my mirrors.
wide open you should get a external speaker for radio buy a single metal ant maybe wilson 2000 road king 56 mic you can hook up hard wired or get cig lighter plug but i dont like those just get good ground on ant . i also go to batt for power and dont get the motor noise from fuse box then you need 18 feet of cable from ant to radio you now need to get swr s set by some one at a cb shop and you are good my .02

No, we had a 65MPH speed limit with ghost clockers. (FEMA employees running around in cars with radar guns) If they got you and your truck number, then it was over. No second chances, and no appeals. they also didnt give you any slack on 65mph. 66 would get you fired.
The truckers in LA were, for the most part, helpful. I always tried to be courteous to them. THEY were the ones driving for a living, and we were the ones just making a little extra. I think the truckers did not like the fact that we would have 15-20 trailer convoys, and could not do the speed limit on I-10.
FWIW I run a little Uniden pro 510 radio that has a small box, and a Wilson 1000 magmount. My SWR is right, and I am not overdriving. I can talk out to about 15 miles in the flats, or 10miles here at home with some hills. I used it ALOT down in LA, but here at home I rarely turn it on. Chris and I use them on the way to the lake in the Summer when we are traveling together, and IF my kids are not in the truck I will tune into ch19 when out of town just to get traffic info.

Very interesting BD, never knew FEMA did that, they must pay pretty decent. Thats the difference between getting paid by the mile and being a Teamster hourly which i am, no rush and saftey first here.

Yes, they did pay decent, $5 a loaded mile at the start of all of it back in sept 05, and by the time I left in Feb 06 they had dropped it to $3.30 a mile.
The key to making the money was to keep your truck running non stop.
My regular trips were New Orleans airport, 79miles, and West Bank, 101 miles. three to five trips per day were not uncommon (no DOT regs back then)
There were also some Gravy runs that were less than 10 miles with a minimum $300 pay, but it was luck of the draw if you got one. Also had some 200 mile runs to Sulphur, and Grand Isle through the swamps
Hey Izzy,
You are definitely 'da Man on this topic. Got my ticket a couple of years ago and have 2Meter in each vehicle, several HF bases and a 706Mk2G. Still somewhat of a neophyte.I'd like to have access to CB but must have 2M and don't want 2 radios in the truck.
How did you get 27MHz on the 7000? I'd like to do that with the 706 or even the 2M rigs.
TIA.
