Looks like a small block 302 or 351windser.older 302 valve covers. easest way to till 302-351 is upper rad.hose goes into manifold.so do 429-460 s 351-400 m goes into block.way to till 302 from 351w is width off intake manifold. I could be wrong but i think thats a 351w

I can see a temperature sending unit in the intake, which means it's a wet intake, which rules out an 351M\400 for sure. It's either a 429/460 or a 302/351W. I can't really tell if the valve covers are trapezoidal or not. It's impossible to make a positive identification using this picture.

My GUESS is a big block, could be a 351, I don't think theres any way that a 302, to far between the valvecovers.

But as said previously, no way to say for sure.

My guess. 302 or 351W. Going by grille and guessing truck is a 78 or 79 probably not an FE motor.

My guess is that is a 302 or 351 windsor look at the angle of the upper
radiator hose and shape of valve covers. Chuck

Gonna have to go with FE, because of how the heater hose connects to the intake, coil bracket hole on the intake (not used on that engine), looks like a 5 bolt valve cover and the upper radiator hose mounting position.

That is not an FE valve cover!

No FE valve cover ever had that indentation at the top center.

It's not a 351C/351M/400 valve cover either, as it's not wide enough.

It's either a 429/460, as the parts catalog pic shows the valve cover with that indentation.

The intake manifold appears to be the original, and what engine in 1973/79 came with a 4V? 429/460's and 1974/76 390's (as an option).

The 302/351W valve covers are indented at the top front.

The engine has been swapped because this appears to be a 4WD.

The only V8 engines available with 4WD in 1977/79 were the 351M or 400.

No 460 4WD's till 1983, no 1969/79 F100/150 with a 302 ever came with 4WD.

No 351W engines installed in F150/350's till 1981.

If it's a 429, no F100/350 ever came with that engine.

FYI: Valve cover bolts per side.

FE = 5 // 302/351W: 6 / 429/460 = 7 // 351C/351M/400 = 8.

Looks like a 460 to me. I just pulled my tired 460 out of my 77 F250 and it's sitting in back. I just went back and looked at it and everything looks identical, the water temp sending unit, coil bracket mount, valve covers.

IN the 84-86 Ford made the 351w H.O.(I could be wrong on the start up year) that is alot in my opinion a 351w h.o. manifold . I have one in my truck they where cast iron not alum intake manifolds. The valve covers look like older 351w "powered by ford" .Before i thought they where 302 i was wrong.
