I have some more infor on my transmisson. I just bought a 04 f250 4x4 6.0 diesel. It runs fine when its cold after it warms up the problems begin. after about 15 min of driving if you stop at a light, It will rev to about 3-4k before it will engage. But I noticed that if you manually change gears it does much better but sometimes it wont shift into overdrive but I can stop an turn the ignition off and it will shift like its supposed to until you come to another stop sign. but this evening I dropped one of the kids friends off and when I started down the drive it acted like I had slammed on brakes or put it in reverse, it did it about 3 or 4 times finally I put it in 2 and limped home. I did notice while driving around today that it seemed to shift fine if the tow light was flashing. Anyway Im off to purchase an OBD II with CAN maybe I will be able to get the code. Hopefully its something simple like a wire grounding somewhere, It seems I read somewhere that a wire under the dash would rub through.
How hard would it be to swap out the solenoid pack? I have a line on a good tranny with 22K mi but it has a cracked case from a wreck. is it something that I can swap out in the pan or am I is this something that requires special "Ford" tools? If thats the case Ill just buy a used tranny and swap it out over one weekend. Can anybody tell me where the tranny computer is? I want to try and unplug it to clear the memory, I worked on my dads Isuzu cabover that had lost overdrive and that worked.
i beleive the solenoid pack is hidden behind teh valve body.. so u do have to take some of the tranny apart..
now wether ur that brave is another question...
but before u do anything def. have it scanned for codes..u need to know what the tranny is telling u is wrong first off...
as far as the location for the trannys ECM i have no idea..
for what its worth i had to have the OD solenoid and then the ECM replaced on my 99 SD...but in hind sight i bet the ECM was the problem all along...the tranny started a "firm shift" pattern along with the flashing light sickness...
There is no valve body in a TorqShift trans. If you take the pan off the solenoid body is right there. Unbolt it and remove it, the wiring connector goes through the case. The O-ring might stick.
The trans computer is in the same case as the engine computer. It's located between the left front fender and the left side battery. The easiest way to clear it is to disconnect both batteries.
Fordfanatic4life, the 4R100 in your '99 did not have an overdrive solenoid. It had a pressure control solenoid, a torque converter lock solenoid, and two shift solenoids.
My tow light only flashes intermittently does it store the codes?

it has been a few years i must be remebering wrong what the dealer told me as far as solenoids..
i also didnt catch onto the fact his tranny is the newer 5Speed.. i thought that was a 05 and up option..
i do remeber the lengthy ordeal of getting my "firm shift" problem fixed... started with the solenoid repair which didnt last 2 days before it slipped back into firm mode..
then the dealer took my truck back for 2 weeks trying to figure out the ereason and trying to get the "firm shift" problem to occur.. after 2weeks they said they had replaced wiring, and after following the tech manuals service example they ruled out the tranny ECM.. saying because it was returning codes it couldnt be the isue..
but in the end replacing the tranny ecm did fix the problem.. the Techs kinda had a godo laff at that..saying that sometimes even following the manuals exactly wont fix a issue..
but i was still left with wondering if the solenoid pack ever did need replacing...
I have the 4R100 in my truck, would it ever exhibit problems in the same manner a torque shift would? I am not sure if i'm having trans issues or something else, but there is lots of noise when engaging in forward or reverse and I have all new u-joints so I am suspecting my transmission. No OD lights flashing or anything like that.
Sorry to butt in on this thread but I dont think my issue is worth startin a thread over
