Acquired a 67 GT500 Eleanor w/ 428 CJ, has power but I want more. Mileage after restoration is 1,700. Having a shop tear it down and rebuild it as I don't know whats in it. I want your thoughts on the parts that I have acquired for this rebuild, what kind of power I will be making, and any other options I should look into:
Mass flo fuel injection
Edelbrock performer aluminum heads
Comp roller rockers kit and rocker arm studs
Crane hydraulic roller cam advertised dur: 282/288, dur at .50: 220/226,
valve lift: .584/.607, lobe separation: 110, rpm range 2500-6000
grind # HR-220/332-2S-10, part# 349521
Crane hydraulic roller lifters, and valve springs to match cam
Summit billet steel double roller timing chain and gear set.
I know this is not a truck but this forum has the best FE info that I can find. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds like you got a pretty nice collection of parts. Should be a nice running 428, and plenty of power. Are you going to do any port work on the heads? gasket match, roll/clean them up?
Is this an automatic car or stick? (please be a STICK!)
I'm not sure about port work, as I have never done a build. I guess I will leave that up to the mechanics, since they know a great deal more than I do. The car came with a tremec tko 5 speed and an 04 cobra independent rear with 410 gears and custom built headers and exhaust.
RoyRoost, are you serious ? Even a very mild 428 ought to have more than enough power to make a light body like a mustang do anything you want it to do. First off, I would be worried about that '04 independant rear. I'm not even remotely confident that those have enough strength to deal with a 428. What if your 428's fuel injection has a milquetoast program to keep you from grenading the rear ? I'd be looking for a 9 incher.
But on your engine, firstly, the cam is way, WAY too small. Crane offers a hydralic roller that has 238/246 @ 050, you might try that. Be prepared to change the valvesprings as well.
And I wonder if, with the 410 gears in the axle, and the super tiny Grandmother cam, the engine is spinning fast enough that it is well past the torque peak. 428s do very nicely with 3.25 or 3.5 gears. Are you out on the street having fun, or drag racing, or what ?
If you want 600 horsepower, we can help you get it. But 500 is enough to break axles, twist off inputs, shatter U joints, all kinds of stuff. What are you going to ask this car to do ? DinosaurFan

I would disagree with the gearing thing. Mainly because the kick butt package for the 428CJ was with 4.30 gears and I'm here to tell you it was indeed the way to go.
I think this car was built for show, but I love to take it down our country roads and run the hell out of it. I also take it to shows, and cruise on the weekend with my wife and baby. It did come with nitrous can and the "go baby go" button on the shifter, just never got around to pushing it. I did look into the bigger cam from Crane, just figured the smaller one would work for my application. Thanks for the feedback.
Sounds to me like you need to leave it the heck alone, and enjoy what you have. I enjoy my pickup in much the same way. I don't drive it every week because of fuel cost but when I do, it can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
