1. People are gonna tell you it can be done but you're better off to buy at 4X4 frame because of the front diff and crossmember issues with the big crossmember that the 2wd has.
2. The frames are totally different from the 73 to the 80's. With that said the TTB that is on the 80's 4x4's will bolt into the 2wd I-beam spots. So converting an 80's truck from 2wd to 4x4 would be much easier. Check out the 80-96 forum for more info on that.
3. Don't know anything about the 360, but I'm sure someone will let you know something about that.
yes a 4x4 conversion can be done but it is a lot more work then needed. it will **** you off for sure. so if you got time money and patince then it is a good chalanging project. but there is alot incorporated with converting to a 4x4. the 360 is an excellent engine you can get that kind of milage but you are going to have to keep you foot out of it. but i assure you the 360 is a very very good engine dont let one persons engine neglect of maintance turn you away
Welcome Whiplashed, yes the 360 is a good motor, tuned up it will do just fine, and get ok mpg for a truck, 11-13 I don't think would be hard, keeping your foot out of it is the hard part, for me at least! And yes, UNLESS you have loads of time and are looking for a project, I would scour around and look for a 4x4 frame with a shot body, and then put the time into making the adjustments you would like.
Welcome again to FTE
