ok, here we go. I've got an 03 250 7.3 (72k) with CCV mod, 6637,muffler delete, and just added gauges(trans temp, pyro, and boost). I want to add a programmer but am worried bout trashing my tranny. What mods should i consider in preperation for the tuner? i have already bought a larger tranny cooler and a Derale? oil pan (not installed yet). I've heard many talk about a Factory Tech VB, but could i not jus take mine to a tranny shop and have them modify it the same or should i consider something else? Also should i consider a torque converter since its the "weak link". I usually dont pull more than 8k lbs. on reasonably flat area. Just wanting yalls opinion on this cause i want to do it right and have a little fun. Thanks
Well, you COULD go with a Monster Box, do a search on it. That's of course if you want to drop some bucks...
You could also install a sonnix (sp?) valve to firm up the shift, unless the programmer will do it.
I did the transgo tugger and absolutely Love it. If your comfortable removing the vb's, drilling a couple of holes and replacing springs. Go for it. For 100 bucks you can mod both vb's.
EDIT: Here is the transgo install video http://www.transgo.com/video.php
Yeah forgot to mention i have a tranny that is perfect working order and would like to just beef up the current transmission i have without breaking the bank. and i do realize that i'm lookin at around $400 for a TC and $150-$200 for a VB. jus wanted to know what some have tried, brands, etc. or If i'm going overboard. So....
Thanks hucka1a. Would this be equal to buying the Factory Tech VB or other VB's?
At the least it would be equal to these vb's. After doing some reading and actually doing the install, it's better than just replacing the accumulator vb. IIRC. BTS uses the transgo kit in his vb's. With the transgo. You not only mod the accumulator vb, but also the main vb, and if necessary the solenoid pack. The tugger kit comes with the stuff to also do more mods if the trans is out of the vehicle. Most everyone that has done this, just does the mods that I mentioned.
Thanks guys, should i consider a Torque converter also? I consider myself mechanically inclined and would have no hesitation in doing the mods jus want to do the rights ones. Thanks
It's a gamble on replacing the T/C. If you replace it and your tranny goes, you'll be buying another new T/C along with a trans. On the other hand. If your like me, I'm gonna replace mine because the T/C's in the early 99's are worse than the 99.5-03's. My truck just has 46K on it, so I'm gonna take the gamble and replace mine.
BTW. Instead of buying a programmer. You should really consider buying a chip. I have a chip from DP Tuner and it is awesome! These chips are customized for your individual needs. Where a programmer is a one size fits all, dp tuner takes into consideration all of the mods that you've done to your truck and writes the tunes accordingly.
Ck. when saying programmer i ment a Dp tuner "chip" cause i've already been convinced by several to go the Dp way. I was jus using the generic term "programmer" that everyone uses. Thanks again.
