hey everybody I am new to this forum and have found some information in the past on here so I figured I would join up and see if i could ask if anybody has ever put a newer dome light in a 76 f150 I was going to replace it with a factory light for that year but the lights kind of stunk in that era so as i am looking at the wires there is only one that runs to the light and it is grounded through the cab by a separate screw. I have found a 2000 interior dome light that i would like to put in it but i am worried that I could overload the circuit the new light has three lights, one for the door and two map lights, I was jut going to wire these all so that they come on when I turn it on from my headlight switch or when my door opens I have read other things like the wires might not be able to handle that but I do not know a whole lot about that kind of wiring. Any body have any thoughts or info ??
Welcome Montana, as long as you aren't going to leave them on for a long period of time,,,, should be ok. However, I would wire just the middle one for the door, and then have the side ones run off the switches...
I think you are fine. There is a 3amp fuse protecting the circuit. I don't think three of those running at one time would be that big of draw...the circuit controls all the dash lights/inst. cluster lights, and the dome light. I would leave the two map lights to come on only when depressed (switched). Also it's either a 16ga or 18ga wire running that circuit.
Thx for the catch Bullitt390...you are right. The blue/red and runs through the fuse box is for dash lights/inst. cluster only. The grey/yellow and blk/blue go to the door jamb switches, cigar lighter, it's a 15amp. My '73 radio wasn't on that circuit but will soon be on it's own circuit with my current wiring improvement project.
