cherry bomb?

was pricing a exhaust online @ autozone a cherrybomb glasspack is only $20 vs a stock replacement for 27. anyone ever run one? i had been considering headers, but cost and possibility of broken bolts in the head make me think i'll just go with a stock-replacement cat-back and be done with it. my 16 y/o exhaust is fine with the exception of the flange that joins the intermeadeate pipe to the converter is rusted away, ive litterly got black tarp straps "pulling" the muffler/pipe assy up against the cat flange. once in a while a strap will break and things get loud. so how's a glasspack sound? will i hate it? ive thought of getting a tractor muffler from t.s.c. ive done that before with a full-size, i just need to get measurements so i can go to t.s.c. with a tape and see what would work. usually a tractor muffler is way cheaper than a automotive replacement, but a 20 dollar glaspack may be tough to beat $-wise. evrything including gaskets for both sides of the converter is 86.95, wish they made flexpipe that withstood the "salt belt" a little better, id just completely build my own, along with a splitter and fake duals. but then id be doing it every year. this is on a '93 ranger 4.0 ohv with a 5 speed manual and electric shift 4x4.

Try a a Cherry Bomb/Thrush/Dynomax turbo muffler. A glasspack is going to sound bad...

I got a 18"L x 2.25" Cherry Bomb on the '91 Explorer 4.0L in my signature. Sounds good and it has been on there for over 7 years. Its a little loud but it sounds real good and does not drone. Do not get a Turbo muffler, I had one on another '91 Explorer 4.0L, sounded really tinny and cheap. Flowmasters produce a lot of droning, unpleasant noises on the 4.0, steer clear of them as well. Get the Cherry Bomb, you will not be dissapointed!

Thats kind of funny, because my experience has been just the opposite. Cherrybomb is manufactured by IMCO, which to me has set a record of building low quality products. Everyones experience is different, but the muffler I use on my van is built like a Flowmaster, and I selected it because it doesn't drone. I would steer clear of glasspacks. I do not consider them to be a real muffler, and if you like they way they sound now, you sure won't when the packing flows out, which they inevitably do.

Before you buy a muffler, ask yourself a few basic questions. How loud do you really want it. Do you even listen to music or audiobooks? Will your wife/girlfriend like it? Do you ever drive long distances?

I like listening to music or books, so I choose a tamer muffler. I know a lot of guys who got loud mufflers, only to replace them with something tamer after a short while because the wife didn't like driving to the grocer store in it. And if it drones or resonates, or is loud on the highway, you will find yourself going nuts, especially i you need to drive for more than an hour at a time.

If the Fullblown 50 series on your Aerostar is like a Flowmaster 50 series (3 chamber design), I would be interested in hearing it. My experience with 4.0s and Flowmasters was with a buddies Ranger and a 40 series, the most horrible resonations I have ever heard!

As far as the Cherry Bomb goes, everyone gets their own opinion, but mine is not super loud, even without a cat, over 7 years, and over 35,000 miles. My wife currently drives the Explorer and does not find it objectionable while making a 20 minute (each way) highway communte 5 days a week. When I was young and I put that muffler on the Explorer I was actually quite dissapointed about how quiet it was!

This is a sound clip from my van with the Fullblown 50 series.

http://www.bearriverconverters.com/s...seriesAero.wav

This was taken with a camcorder, but I had to place a cotton rag over the mic to to keep the microphone from picking up the wind, so no picture. I do have some videos I could put on YouTube.

The problem with them is that the fiberglass packing burns out, so they get louder. I have one that is over 7 years old and has not rusted out. I think they are a bad choice with V8s, I prefer chambered mufflers for V8s, but I like them on the 4.0L.

ive been thinking, maybe overthinking, but what if i elimanate the last 90 degree bend in the stock exhaust setup and go straight out the back end, exiting under the rear bumper vs behind the r.r. tire? any benefits/drawbacks? ive x'ed the glasspack idea and am just going to run a turbo muffler, it has a staggered outlet, i could just turn it so the outlet runs close to the bed floor and run it straight out the rear, no bends for over the axle or making the turn to exit behind the tire. id have room for axle travel, thats not a issue. im not even sure it would be a advantage. but what if it would be......?
