was pricing a exhaust online @ autozone a cherrybomb glasspack is only $20 vs a stock replacement for 27. anyone ever run one? i had been considering headers, but cost and possibility of broken bolts in the head make me think i'll just go with a stock-replacement cat-back and be done with it. my 16 y/o exhaust is fine with the exception of the flange that joins the intermeadeate pipe to the converter is rusted away, ive litterly got black tarp straps "pulling" the muffler/pipe assy up against the cat flange. once in a while a strap will break and things get loud. so how's a glasspack sound? will i hate it? ive thought of getting a tractor muffler from t.s.c. ive done that before with a full-size, i just need to get measurements so i can go to t.s.c. with a tape and see what would work. usually a tractor muffler is way cheaper than a automotive replacement, but a 20 dollar glaspack may be tough to beat $-wise. evrything including gaskets for both sides of the converter is 86.95, wish they made flexpipe that withstood the "salt belt" a little better, id just completely build my own, along with a splitter and fake duals. but then id be doing it every year. thoughts? / comments?
Cherry bombs are allright, they get louder as they get older. There not really all that loud when new, but give them time, they'll get thunderious!!!!!!
I'm thinking about doing that too, possibly make it a short system, and dump it out in FRONT of the rear wheel, as I just about bent my stock(original) tailpipe closed backing into a spot in the city by my daughters house that had piled snow and a high curb..Thought about a turbo muffler, but when or if I do this, I going to go smaller on the muffler I.D., and tailpipe by half an inch, just for a little "backpressure", so as to not throw the 'puter a curveball.. Am I right in this thinking, or not?????
you would be shortning the exhaust and making it slightly smaller, i doubt it would cause any harm. you may get crappy rims though, expellcially in winter. i dont think the computer controls would notice the difference.
I had a '91 Exploder with full length exhaust that had a glasspack rather than a muffler, it wasn't all that loud. It depends on your taste in noise level. I usually run strait pipe rather than a muffler, but either keep a full length system or have some sort or tailpipe(s). Wendell is right that glasspacks get louder as they age, heat burns up the fiberglass packing and it looses some of it's sound deadening ability as that happens. If you're simply trying to save money, a glasspack will probably outlast the $27 "stock" muffler, but it will still rust out at the welds. If you can get to a Mills Fleet Farm, their "stock" replacement is probably as cheap as you'll come across, but keep in mind you probably get what you pay for. A lifetime warranty muffler may pay for it's self if you plan to keep the truck a while...
i like the brand cherrybombs just dont like glasspacks, i would go with a good set of flowmasters. if you wanna go cheap try ebay they have some good products just read carefully.
You don't really get more power from the nonrestrictive mufflers, it just sounds like you do. I guy on here dyno'ed a catback once and got 3 hp, the dyno could be in error up to 3 hp. So gains are small if any, but the cool sound is worth the money. Some people say they have gotten up tp 1 mpg more with a good catback. However, it's the rumble that makes it worth wild, if nothing else.
I have a magna flo on my 4.0, pretty mellow but I also had the guy do a complete 2.5 exhaust system from the Y pipe back. Free flow cat, free flow muffler, not one of the fancy no crease (cant think of term) bend pipes but he did minimize the bends and kept the pipe as straight as possible. Runs good, sounds good and no drone in the cab. paid around $400 but it has been well worth it. did help with mpg a bit but I drive 150 miles rt daily. I also have a free flow air intake to match the exhaust. average around 20 mpg sometimes better runnin the speedlimit which is 75 out here, so the exhause and intake did help.
When I was younger the cherry bombs actually mellowed with age on my old 383 charger, and 400 ford unless you really pushed them for the noise. I think they would be loud in a truck but then again if you want to save a couple of bucks.
You can have a repair shop fix the flange part for you if the rest of the system is fine. I've done it for quite a few customers with rangers and explorers

Thats a good idea, but just make sure they "can" weld..Some of these shops say "yeah, we can weld one on for ya", and they put 3 pounds of stick on the darn thing, and it looks like hell!!!
